SpawLab EASY earth cable 3 m 500 A

An ultra compact stationary earth point: a Polish, workshop made 3 m earth cable with a heavy 500 A load rating in the optimised EASY series. The very short run removes voltage drops and the harmful induction loops that build up around the inverter. The contact joints are crimped hydraulically under press pressure, with no tin solder. The right answer for spot tacking of thick plate on the table, under a strict thermal regime (35% duty cycle).

EASY 3 m 500 A: maximum energy in a compact form

The SpawLab earth cable of the EASY series, 3 metres long, is professional equipment built to cut voltage losses at extreme currents of around 500 amps. The short transfer path together with a 70 mm2 cross section holds the Delta U voltage drop at only 1.57 V, a benchmark figure for arc stability in MIG/MAG welding. In the EASY series the physics of the process is tuned to heavy assembly work and to tacking of structures, where what counts is ignition force and clean penetration without needless weight of equipment. With this cable you keep the power transistors of your welder in service condition and limit the harmful heat built up in the secondary circuit.

Energy loss and voltage drop analysis (IWE audit)

The table below sets out the calculated Delta U voltage drops and the thermal behaviour of the full circuit at a current of 500 A and an earth cable of 3 m (70 mm2).

Welding process Equipment (length/cross section) Delta U voltage drop Working behaviour
MIG/MAG Earth 3 m (70 mm2) + torch 5 m (50 mm2) 1.57 V Short heavy welds; stable spray arc.
TIG Earth 3 m (70 mm2) + torch 8 m (40 mm2) 2.67 V Power loss 1335 W; an efficient cooler is needed.
MMA Earth 3 m (70 mm2) + torch 3 m (70 mm2) 0.94 V Ideal balance; maximum current stabilisation.

Who is this equipment for?

This product is made for metal workshops and heavy industry doing assembly work where the operator stands close to the power source. It is the right choice for welders who prefabricate thick plate, recondition construction machinery and carry out hardfacing, where a short and thick earth cable transfers energy without losses. The EASY series with its 20% duty cycle is meant for intensive tacking and welding of short runs at the highest current settings, which makes it a tool you cannot replace at stationary workstations.

Closer look at the technology and the functions

70 mm2 copper core in the EASY system

A 70 mm2 cross section over a distance of 3 metres is a deliberate engineering decision meant to keep the impedance of the welding circuit as low as possible. At 500 amps the current density is spread over an optimal area of electrolytic copper, which sharply cuts resistive heating during short welding cycles. The physics of this solution lets the arc ignite almost instantly, which is the key point in assembly processes that call for high heat input per unit length. Thanks to the large mass of copper the cable works as a passive voltage stabiliser and shields the power source from sudden reverse surges. Choosing the EASY series in this cross section means the electrical energy goes 100% into melting the material instead of being scattered as unwanted heat in the cable.

20% duty cycle: the logic of assembly work

The logic of the EASY series follows the nature of assembly work, where the full 500 A load comes in interrupted cycles typical of tacking structures or laying short welds. With about 2 minutes of welding in every 10 minutes of the cycle, the 70 mm2 cable holds a safe working temperature, which prevents accelerated ageing of the insulation and the copper. This behaviour keeps the equipment highly flexible, and at a length of 3 metres that is valued on workstations crowded with tooling. The way the H01N2-D insulation carries heat away keeps the operator safe even at extreme direct and alternating currents. It is a solution for process engineers who put mobility and fast joint preparation ahead of welding in a continuous system.

H01N2-D chloroprene insulation

The outer sheath of the SpawLab cable is made of chloroprene rubber with raised resistance to the thermal and chemical factors found in a demanding industrial setting. H01N2-D material stands up to oils, greases and direct contact with welding spatter at temperatures above 1000 degrees Celsius. The physical strength of the sheath protects the copper core against abrasion and against cracking under UV radiation, which matters for keeping the welder electronics in service condition. The insulation stays very supple, so a cable of this cross section does not fight back while you move the torch, and that clearly improves the ergonomics of the work. This layer forms a protective barrier that holds the dielectric stability of the circuit even in raised humidity.

Brass pincer earth clamp PRO Heavy Duty

The EASY series cable ends in a massive earth clamp cast from highly conductive brass, which gives a stable contact point on the material. Brass conducts heat far better than copper plated steel, so there is no risk of burning a pit at the earth point while working at 500 A. A strong pressure spring with a hard characteristic holds the mechanical connection firmly, and that is the basis for keeping contact resistance low across the whole secondary circuit. The cable meets the clamp through a thick walled copper ferrule, which stops the conductor strands from working loose under vibration and temperature swings. A solid earth contact means not only a better weld, but above all safety for the IGBT modules inside the machine, which are then not exposed to sudden breaks in the current flow.

Industrial applications

  • Heavy structural fabrication: Tacking of parts over 20 mm thick with MIG/MAG.
  • Reconditioning and hardfacing: Rebuilding the working surfaces of construction and mining machinery.
  • Shipyard assembly: Assembly work close to the welding power sources.
  • Stick welding (MMA): Work with large diameter electrodes (5.0 mm - 6.0 mm) that call for full power.

Technical FAQ

Is a length of 3 metres enough for welding at 500 A?
At currents around 500 A the shorter the cable, the smaller the energy losses. A length of 3 m suits stationary work and gives the lowest Delta U voltage drop available in the EASY series.

Why does the EASY series use 70 mm2 instead of thinner cables?
At 500 A thinner cables would overheat and melt their insulation after a dozen or so seconds. A 70 mm2 cross section keeps the work safe in a 20% duty cycle and protects the inverter from failure.
