Paton PRO-160 MMA/TIG Lift welder, key data
The versatile PATON PRO-160 inverter welder is built for manual arc welding with the MMA method, for arc welding under argon with the TIG method in direct current and for semi-automatic welding with the MIG/MAG method under shielding gases and gas mixtures.
This model reaches a duty cycle of 70% at its full rated current of 160A, which is enough to work with any electrode from 1.6mm up to consumable 4mm and for semi-automatic welding with solid wire from 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm (MIG/MAG welding is possible once a wire feeder has been bought separately). The machine comes set to values that suit most cases of use. Demanding users can select every parameter on their own.
The VDI PRO series offers full electronic control, which gives wider control over the welding process in each of the chosen methods and also lets the machines be used to their full potential. Welding inverters of the PRO series are intended for industrial use and for the most demanding home users.
Main advantages of the Paton PRO-160 MMA welder
- European production of welders
- Electronic thermal protection system guarding every heat generating component against overheating
- An external wire feeder can be connected
- Works on long extension leads and with a generator
- A pulsed current welding mode in every method
- Improved stability of the electric arc
- Hot-Start (hot striking), Arc-Force (arc force) and Anti-Force (anti sticking) functions
- The machines have protection against voltage surges and a stabilising circuit, which keeps them working correctly across the voltage range from 160V to 260V
- Half the electricity demand compared with conventional power sources
- Correct fusion and bead shape regardless of welding position
5 year manufacturer warranty for consumers and for companies
Build quality confirmed by a 5 year DOOR-to-DOOR manufacturer warranty. Models in the VDI PRO series have a compact design with a number of technical solutions that make the machines less prone to failure. Inverter reliability in dusty and humid surroundings has been increased by moving the electronics into a separate chamber, and the electronic parts are also impregnated with high class varnish.

The Hot-Start function (hot striking) gives the best possible start to the weld and first rate ignition: at the moment the arc strikes, for a short instant, the working welding current rises from the set working level to the optimum level. In some cases (work on a weak mains or on a generator) this level can be set by hand where the right switch is fitted (as in the Professional series). Lowering Hot-Start to cut energy draw from a weak mains, or raising it on a strong mains, makes ignition much easier.
The Arc-Force function (arc force) serves to improve the stability of burning in a short arc and to prevent the electrode sticking. When a drop of metal separates from the electrode, the current is raised automatically to a certain level where the right switch is fitted (as in the Professional series). By lowering the arc force to cut energy draw from a weak mains, or raising it on a strong mains, the stability of burning in the arc is improved even further.
The Anti-Stick function (anti sticking) lets the welder free the electrode from the workpiece easily. In the event of a short circuit, after a brief pause, the welding current is reduced automatically. Once the electrode is free of the part, the power source returns to normal operation on its own.
Main advantages of the PATON inverter welder:
- Broad adjustment of welding parameters:
, the MMA method, 1 (basic) + 10 (additional)
, the TIG method, 1 (basic) + 4 (additional)
, the MIG/MAG method, 1 (basic) + 5 (additional) - Welding with pulsed current, which is also programmable, in every welding mode.
- A system of protection against voltage surges.
- A further stabilising circuit is fitted for larger long term voltage differences in the single phase mains, from 160 V to 260 V.
- Matched to the standard mains supply. Thanks to its high efficiency the power source needs half the electricity compared with conventional sources.
- Adaptive fan speed, which rises at the start of welding, rises further when the welder is hot and drops when it is cool, which saves fan wear and cuts the amount of dust inside the welder.
- Comfortable work thanks to good load endurance at the rated current, which allows welding with electrodes practically without a break at the rated current.
- A thermal protection system guarding every heat generating part of the welding unit against overheating.
- Longer life thanks to impregnation of the electronics with two layers of high quality varnish, which keeps the product dependable throughout its service life.
- Improved stability of the electric arc.
- Efficiency thanks to the latest advanced IGBT technology.
