Böhler EMK 8-Ultra wire: classification, properties and base materials
The classification G 46 4 M21 4Si1 and G 46 4 C1 4Si1 to EN ISO 14341-A means a weld metal with a yield strength of at least 460 MPa, a tensile strength of 530 to 680 MPa, an elongation of at least 20% and 47 J impact energy at -40 °C, under M21 or pure CO2. The Böhler data sheet gives typical all-weld metal values under M21 of Re 490 MPa, Rm 610 MPa, A5 26% and 115 J at -50 °C with a minimum of 75 J, and under CO2 480 MPa, 580 MPa, 28% and also 115 J. The wire joins steels with a yield strength up to 460 MPa: S235 to S355 in quality grades JR, J0 and J2, S450J0, fine-grained S275N to S460N and S275M to S460M, pressure vessel steels P235GH to P355GH, fine-grained P275NL1 to P460NL1, line pipe steels L245NB to L415NB and cast steels GE200 to GE240. You weld with direct current, wire on the positive pole (DC+), under shielding gases C1, M1, M2 and M3 to EN ISO 14175. Why 4Si1 and what Ultra means
The 4Si1 symbol stands for a wire with more silicon and manganese than the common 3Si1 type, in EMK 8-Ultra typically 0.1% C, 1.0% Si and 1.7% Mn. Ultra is the name of Böhler's latest series of copper-coated solid wires. The manufacturer states that the new copper surface technology prevents clogging and flaking of the coating. According to Böhler, strictly controlled raw material and optimised chemistry give a stable arc, fewer silicate islands on the weld face and less post-weld cleaning. How to set up your welder for 1.0 mm wire
Fit drive rolls with a V groove for 1.0 mm, a steel liner sized for this diameter and a 1.0 mm contact tip, and connect the torch to the positive pole (DC+). The 18 kg spool is a BS300 wire basket, which according to Böhler needs no adapter. Set the lowest roll pressure at which the wire feeds without slipping, because too much pressure flattens the wire, strips the copper and the flakes clog the liner. On a synergic machine, pick the program for SG2/SG3 (G3Si1/G4Si1) steel wire 1.0 mm and your gas, then trim the arc length. Keep the wire stick-out at 10 to 15 mm in short arc and 15 to 20 mm in spray arc, and set the M21 gas flow to about 12 to 15 l/min. Use short arc for thin sheet and out-of-position welds, and keep spray arc in M21 for thicker sections in PA and PB. Pure CO2 will not give you a spray arc, and spatter will be higher than with M21.
