Lorch P 5500 Basic is an inverter MIG/MAG system with a separate wire feeder and liquid cooling. You set the current from 25 to 550 A, at 400 A the machine runs at a 100% duty cycle. The supply is 3 x 400 V with a tolerance of 15%.
What this machine is for
This is a system for welding thick plate and heavy steel structures, also in multi shift work. The duty cycle at 40°C is 500 A at 60% and 400 A at 100%, so you plan continuous work up to 400 A, and the full 550 A stays as a reserve for short, heavy passes.
The Basic panel is simple: two knobs for stepless control of the welding voltage and of the wire feed speed plus digital displays of voltage and current. On top of that comes the Quatromatic mode, that is a four step sequence with control of the start and of the crater fill. Such operation shortens the training of the operator, because there is no menu to walk through, and you read the settings straight off the displays.
The feeder is separate and has a four roll drive mechanism, which keeps an even feed also of soft aluminium wires and of thicker cored wires. The interconnection cable is about 20 to 30 m, so the heavy power source stands in one place, and you work with the light feeder at a large structure, in a big hall or at height, without moving the whole machine.
The range from 25 to 550 A covers both thinner sheet at the lower settings and thick sections at the upper ones. At such currents the whole path counts though: the cross section of the earth cable, the state of the torch and the flow in the liquid circuit, because these set the real limit of work, not the setting on the panel itself.

What to watch out for
The supply is 3 x 400 V with a tolerance of 15% and a required fuse of 35 A, that is a separate power circuit. Liquid cooling is run by the WUK 5 module, so before the start you check the level and the flow of the coolant, and after a stop in an unheated hall whether the fluid has frozen.
The long interconnection cable gives reach, but it needs space for routing and a solid mounting, because a bundle dragged over the floor wears out fastest. At that length the voltage drop also grows, so you pick the settings with the route in mind. The MB501 torch is 4 m, the earth cable 3 m. You move the set with the power source, the feeder and the cooler on a pallet, and you treat the station as fixed. You match the rolls in the feeder to the diameter and the type of wire, with aluminium wires you need U grooves and a teflon liner.
How we sell used machines
This unit was checked in our service workshop in Krotoszyn with measurements to PN-EN 60974-4 and a load test. The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added. We ship across the European Union, collection in person by appointment.
