ESAB Origo Mig 502cw with an Origo Feed 304 feeder is a MIG/MAG set for heavy production, with a source in chopper technology and an integrated liquid cooler. The documentation gives 500 A at a 60% duty cycle and 400 A at a continuous 100% load, with a supply of 3 x 400 V to 415 V, 50 Hz. The interconnection cable is about 10 m, so the source stays in place and you walk with the feeder.
What this machine is for
This is a source for production plants, shipyards, rebar shops and structural workshops, where the station works a whole shift. You set the current from 20 A at 14 V to 500 A at 39 V, and at a continuous load the machine gives 400 A, so you lay thick fillet and multi pass welds without breaks for cooling down. The chopper controls current and voltage steplessly, so you set the working point exactly where you want it, over the whole load scale, and the arc is smoother and reacts faster than in stepped transformer welders.
The set handles MIG/MAG, MMA and air carbon arc gouging. Gouging with a current reaching 500 A helps when you remove faulty welds and prepare grooves for new joints in repair and dismantling work. The four roll Feed 304 feeder drives wires from 0.6 mm to 1.6 mm in diameter at a speed from 1.9 m/min to 25.0 m/min, so it pulls solid, rutile and metal cored wire at high currents.
On large structures, that is semi trailers, tanks and machine frames, the greatest value of the set is the reach. An interconnection cable of about 10 m joins a torch of 5 m, so the working zone reaches close to 15 m from the source. You set the heavy source once, in a safe place, and move only the feeder along the part. The machine has no synergic programs and no pulse, you run the whole process with voltage and current settings, which suits experienced welders who want a predictable arc across the whole power band. The simple control design has one more advantage: a fault is easier to trace in the hall, and parts for the chopper series are cheaper than modules for new pulse sources.
Features and equipment
- Source in chopper technology on transistor switches: stepless current and voltage adjustment, a smooth arc and a fast reaction in the pool, without pulse electronics that are hard to diagnose in a hall.
- Stepless inductance adjustment: lowering it hardens the arc and raises the dynamics on thin material, raising it makes the arc soft and calm, so with the MAG method under CO2 you get less spatter.
- Integrated liquid cooler in the cw version, with a built in pump: it takes the heat away from the torch, which above 300 A is the condition for work without breaks.
- ESAB LogicPump system (ELP): the pump starts only when you connect a liquid cooled torch, so the pump wears less and the hall is quieter during breaks.
- Burn-back adjustment from 0 s to 0.5 s: the end of the wire does not stick to the weld edge or to the contact tip after the arc goes out.
- Creep start slow wire approach, switched on and off: the arc strikes softly, the start of the bead is repeatable and spatters less, which matters with many small tacks.
- ESAB Origo Feed 304 four roll feeder in a closed housing: it drives hard and soft wires over long distances, has a Euro socket, voltage and current displays and the wire speed setting at the station.
- Interconnection cable of about 10 m: it carries current, shielding gas, coolant and control signals in one bundle.
- MIG torch of 5 m and earth cable of 4 m: freedom of movement counted from the feeder, not from the source.
- Metal housing with protection class IP23: it takes dust, temperature swings and the mechanical loads typical for a production hall.
- MMA mode: a characteristic for stick electrodes, useful in repairs and assembly where gas shielding will not stay over the pool.
- Air carbon arc gouging at high currents: with a carbon electrode you take a faulty weld out down to sound material and prepare a groove for a new joint, without moving the part to another station.
- Voltage and current displays on the feeder panel: you read the values at the part, not at a source 10 m away, so you correct straight after a test bead.
- Trolley for the source and a gas regulator in the set: you plug the station in at the hall and start it without buying extra accessories.

What to watch out for
The set needs a supply of 3 x 400 V to 415 V at 50 Hz and a circuit sized for a machine draw of 500 A, so before start-up check the cable cross section and the fuse in the hall. Once it stands at the station, look over the coolant couplings and the state of the interconnection cable of about 10 m, because that is the section most exposed to chafing and leaks in such a set. You check the level and the cleanliness of the coolant before the first start, because above a load of 300 A work without cooling ends with a damaged torch.
The source and the feeder are two heavy items, so for unloading and carrying you need a trolley or two people, and the cw version with a cooler weighs more than the gas cooled variant. The machine has no pulse and no synergic programs, you set everything by hand with the voltage, the wire speed and the inductance, so for a beginner welder it is a harder start. Class IP23 allows the dust and damp of a hall, but not washing with a jet.
How we sell used machines
This unit was checked in our service workshop in Krotoszyn with measurements to PN-EN 60974-4 and a load test. The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added. We ship across the European Union, collection in person by appointment.
