EASY 10 m 400 A: maximum reach for assembly work

The SpawLab earth cable of the EASY series, 10 metres long, is made for engineers and welders who put mobility in the shop first and do not want to move the power source. With a 50 mm2 cross section at 400 A this equipment works at the edge of its transfer capacity and gives off a power loss of about 1.5 kW, which turns into heat. The physics of the process in the EASY series forces a strict 20 percent duty cycle, which makes this cable the right tool for tacking structures and for short assembly welds. With this model you gain an extreme working radius and keep full service protection for the machine, because the resistance of the circuit is matched precisely to the character of installation work.

Energy loss and voltage drop analysis (IWE audit)

The table below sets out the calculated Delta U voltage drops and the thermal behaviour of the full circuit at a current of 400 A and an earth cable of 10 m (50 mm2).

Welding process Equipment set-up Delta U voltage drop Working capacity
MIG/MAG Earth 10 m (50 mm2) + torch 5 m (40 mm2) 2.86 V High heat emission; tacking only is advised.
TIG Earth 10 m (50 mm2) + torch 8 m (35 mm2) 3.77 V Loss of 1.5 kW; a strong inverter is needed.
MMA Earth 10 m (50 mm2) + torch 10 m (50 mm2) 3.12 V Mirror balance; intermittent duty (max 2 min).

Who is this equipment for?

The SpawLab EASY 10 m 400 A cable is made for metalworking shops, assembly crews and construction firms that need maximum reach while the equipment stays light. It is the right choice for assembling large steel structures, railings or industrial installations, where the welder has to stay at a safe distance from the place of work. Because of the high power loss turned into heat, this equipment is meant for intermittent duty and short welding runs. It is an excellent tool for tradespeople who understand the discipline of the duty cycle and need an economical answer for assembly tasks over a wide radius.

Closer look at the technology and the functions

Physics of transfer over a distance of 10 m (50 mm2)

Using a 50 mm2 cross section over a length of 10 metres at 400 A is a precise engineering compromise between weight and energy transfer capacity. The physics of direct current means accepting a Delta U voltage drop of 2.86 V, which follows directly from the resistivity of copper over such a long run. To keep the system safe, the EASY series uses pure electrolytic copper, which holds down the temperature rise of the core during short loads. This set-up lets the electronics of the machine run steadily, as long as the operator keeps to the recommended breaks for the equipment to cool. The welder is then not exposed to dangerous reverse voltage spikes, which gives the inverter full service protection. It is a solution for processes where operator mobility is the critical factor and arc time is limited to assembly tasks.

20 percent duty cycle: managing the heat

The logic of the EASY series rests on a 20 percent duty cycle, which means at most 2 minutes of welding at the full 400 A in every 10 minutes of system time. At a length of 10 metres and a 50 mm2 cross section the cable gives off about 1.5 kW of heat, which makes it a passive consumer of energy in the secondary circuit. Engineering discipline in use is the key point here, because excessive heating could lead to thermal breakdown of the chloroprene insulation. Managing this process consciously lets you use the full power of the machine for quick tack and move tasks without worrying about the life of the equipment. The EASY series fills a market gap for mobile tasks, where the heavy and costly PRO series cables with larger cross sections would be far less ergonomic. It is technical backing for mobile workstations, where speed of reaction and reach decide the output of the whole assembly process.

H01N2-D chloroprene insulation (heavy duty)

The SpawLab cable of the EASY series is protected by a specialised chloroprene rubber sheath of the H01N2-D type, resistant to extreme workshop conditions. The material holds up excellently against oils, greases and direct contact with hot welding spatter, which matters during assembly work at ground level. The physical strength of the insulation prevents cracking under UV radiation and ozone, which keeps the electronics in service condition through years of use. The outer jacket stays flexible even at sub-zero temperatures, so a 10 metre run of cable can be coiled easily once outdoor work is done. Thanks to its self-extinguishing properties, H01N2-D insulation raises fire safety at the workstation and protects the copper core against short circuits. It is armour for the copper, built to survive repeated dragging over the sharp edges of steel structures.

Brass clamping system 600 A

The EASY 10 m set is finished with a massive pincer clamp cast from highly conductive brass rather than from copper plated steel. Brass gives far better thermal and electrical transfer, which removes the risk of burning a pit at the contact with the welded material at 400 A. A strong spring with a high clamping force secures a firm mechanical connection, and that is the basis for arc stabilisation at such high voltage drops along the cable. The 50 mm2 cable meets the clamp through a thick walled copper ferrule, which stops the conductor strands from working loose and keeps the current flow trouble free. A solid earth point means not only a better weld, but above all safety for the IGBT modules inside the welder, which are then not exposed to sudden breaks in the circuit. Because it is made of brass, the clamp does not heat up strongly through resistance, which makes the work more comfortable for the welder.

Technical FAQ

Why does this cable have only 50 mm2 at a length of 10 m?
The EASY series is optimised for mobility and economy in assembly work. A 50 mm2 cross section allows work at 400 A in an interrupted cycle and keeps the set light at an extreme reach.

Can I weld with this cable continuously for 15 minutes?
Definitely not. At 400 A and 10 metres the cable gives off 1.5 kW of heat. Continuous work will melt the insulation. For continuous production choose the PRO series with a 95 mm2 cross section.
