EASY 5 m 400 A: an engineering answer to workshop needs
The SpawLab earth cable of the EASY series, 5 metres long, was designed to deliver a steady 400 A while keeping the work comfortable to handle. A 50 mm2 cross section cuts transfer losses effectively, and that shows up as arc stability in the key phases of material fusion. The physics of the EASY series rests on matching the mass of copper to workshop tasks, where mobility of the equipment has to go hand in hand with thermal safety of the insulation. This model gives your machine the right secondary circuit parameters, which directly affects service protection of the power transistors and the repeatable quality of the welds you lay.
Energy loss and voltage drop analysis (IWE audit)
The table below sets out the calculated Delta U voltage drops for the full working circuit at 400 A with a SpawLab EASY earth cable of 5 m and 50 mm2 cross section.
| Welding process | Equipment set-up | Delta U voltage drop | Working behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIG/MAG | Earth 5 m (50 mm2) + torch 5 m (40 mm2) | 1.98 V | Workshop balance; steady transfer. |
| TIG | Earth 5 m (50 mm2) + torch 8 m (35 mm2) | 2.89 V | A stable HF start is required. |
| MMA | Earth 5 m (50 mm2) + torch 5 m (50 mm2) | 1.76 V | Ideal mirror balance for 4.0 mm electrodes. |
Who is this equipment for?
The SpawLab EASY 5 m 400 A cable is made for craft workshops, metalworking firms and maintenance departments, where reliability during assembly work is what counts. It is the right choice for welding steel structures of medium thickness, where 400 A is used to lay fillet and butt welds efficiently. Because of how the EASY series behaves, this equipment performs best in tasks with a 20 percent duty cycle, which makes it an economical and efficient tool for tacking and for welding short runs. It is a solution for tradespeople who expect professional transfer quality while keeping the welding set light.
Closer look at the technology and the functions
Electrolytic copper with a 50 mm2 cross section
Pure copper with a 50 mm2 cross section is the foundation of the EASY series for limiting the active resistance of the circuit at 400 A. The physics of current flow calls for an adequate active cross section so that electrons can move without generating excessive resistive heating, which in cheaper substitutes leads to a drop in arc quality. A 50 mm2 cross section keeps the Delta U voltage drop within 1.98 V, which lets the synergic algorithms in modern welders work precisely. The copper core is a dense braid of fine wires, which gives the cable high flexibility while keeping its full current rating. This is a deliberate engineering decision by SpawLab, meant to deliver energy straight to the weld pool instead of scattering it as heat in the cable. The user gains process stability, and that translates into less spatter and a cleaner weld.
H01N2-D chloroprene insulation
The H01N2-D insulating sheath made of chloroprene rubber gives the highest degree of mechanical and chemical protection in a demanding workshop setting. The material stands up exceptionally well to oils, greases and petrol, which stops the insulation from crumbling under industrial contamination. The physical strength of the sheath protects the copper core against being severed when a trolley runs over it or against abrasion on the sharp edges of steel prefabricated parts. H01N2-D insulation is also fully resistant to UV radiation and ozone, so the cable does not perish even during long work outdoors. The cable stays flexible across a wide temperature range, which makes the equipment easier to handle at the welding station and raises operator comfort. Choosing this class of insulation backs up fire safety at the workstation, thanks to the self-extinguishing properties of chloroprene.
Brass pincer earth clamp 600 A
The EASY series cable is fitted with a solid earth clamp made of a highly conductive brass alloy, which secures a firm electrical connection to the material. Brass conducts heat far better than copper plated steel, so the earth point does not overheat while working at 400 A. A strong spring with a high clamping force holds the contact steady, which is needed to avoid side sparking that could permanently damage the surface of the part. The cable meets the clamp through a thick walled copper ferrule, which stops the strands from working loose and keeps the energy flow trouble free. The clamp is built to survive years of use in hard assembly conditions, giving the contact full service protection. Every part of the clamp resists corrosion, which keeps contact resistance low through the whole service life of the equipment.
20 percent duty cycle (EASY specification)
The logic of the EASY series rests on a 20 percent duty cycle, which means at most 2 minutes of continuous welding at 400 A in every 10 minutes of system time. This behaviour fits tacking of structures, spot assembly and the short welds laid in metalworking shops. Optimising the cycle allows a lighter 50 mm2 cross section, which raises ergonomics and mobility of the set while lowering the purchase cost. Keeping to the recommended welding time means the cable will not overheat, and that is the key to full technical support from the maker and to the life of the insulation. Heat dissipation in this model assumes that the mass of copper is enough to take up the thermal energy of short current pulses. Choosing the EASY series is a deliberate decision to match the capacity of the equipment to the real character of workshop work, where mobility and speed come first.

Technical FAQ
Is this cable suitable for continuous welding?
No, the EASY series with a 50 mm2 cross section at 400 A is meant for intermittent duty (20 percent of the cycle). For production and continuous welding at this amperage choose the PRO series with a 70 mm2 cross section.
How does H01N2-D insulation differ from ordinary rubber?
H01N2-D insulation is a specialised chloroprene resistant to oils, UV and welding spatter. Ordinary rubber perishes quickly and cracks in contact with harsh workshop chemicals.
