EASY series 10 m: maximum reach for assembly work
The SpawLab earth cable of the EASY series, 10 metres long, was designed for tasks that call for extreme mobility while holding a high welding current of up to 500 A. The engineering of the EASY series rests on matching the mass of copper to interrupted tasks such as tacking structures or laying short assembly welds. With a 70 mm2 cross section over 10 metres the system reaches the limit of its transfer capacity, which means the operator has to manage the duty cycle of the machine consciously. It is the ideal answer where reach is the key point and the work does not call for a full, continuous load on the cable, so the power source keeps its service protection while the equipment gets lighter.
Energy loss and voltage drop analysis (500 A EASY)
The analysis below sets out the calculated Delta U voltage drops for the full working circuit at 500 A with a SpawLab EASY earth cable of 10 m (70 mm2).
| Welding process | Equipment set-up | Delta U voltage drop | Working behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIG/MAG | Earth 10 m (70 mm2) + torch 5 m (50 mm2) | 2.67 V | Intermittent duty; risk of heating. |
| TIG | Earth 10 m (70 mm2) + torch 8 m (40 mm2) | 3.77 V | A strong source is needed (loss of 1.8 kW). |
| MMA | Earth 10 m (70 mm2) + torch 10 m (70 mm2) | 1.57 V | Advised for tacking and assembly. |
Who is this equipment for?
The SpawLab EASY 10 m 500 A cable is made for metalworking shops, assembly crews and construction firms that need a wide working radius without moving the welder. It is the ideal answer for “tack and move” work, where 500 A is used in short bursts. Because of the thermal behaviour of the EASY series (20% duty cycle), this is not equipment for continuous industrial welding on production lines, but a highly effective support tool when heavy steel structures are assembled on a building site.
Closer look at the technology and the functions
How the EASY series works (20% duty cycle)
The EASY series was designed around a specific current load profile that allows at most 2 minutes of continuous welding at 500 A, followed by 8 minutes of rest. This behaviour allows a 70 mm2 cross section over a length of 10 metres, which clearly lowers the weight of the equipment and makes it easier to carry at height or into places that are hard to reach. The physics of the welding process in this variant assumes that the mass of copper is enough to take up the thermal energy of short current pulses without breaking down the insulation. It is a compromise built for engineers of assembly processes who put mobility ahead of continuous work. Used with awareness, the EASY series keeps full technical support from the maker while the work stays ergonomic over a long distance. If the recommended welding time is exceeded, a sharp rise in resistance can affect arc stability, which is why this series has clearly set limits of use.
H01N2-D sheath (workshop durability)
Although the EASY series is positioned as an assembly line, its insulation meets the strict industrial standards for H01N2-D welding cables. The chloroprene rubber sheath protects the copper core against UV radiation, ozone and the aggressive chemicals found in workshops, such as oils or coolants. The physical strength of the insulation prevents cracking under repeated coiling, which is the key to keeping the machine electronics in service condition and free of accidental breakdown to earth. Even when the cable warms up under high current, the sheath holds its dielectric properties, as long as the recommended duty cycle is kept. The material stays flexible, so a cable 10 metres long can be handled freely on the uneven floor of a production hall or on a building site. It is body armour for the copper, and it keeps the operator safe even in a damp working environment.
Managing the voltage drop (Delta U 2.67 V)
In the EASY 10 m design for 500 A the key engineering challenge is managing the voltage drop, which in this set-up comes to 2.67 V for the MIG process. Such a high Delta U figure follows from the natural resistance of 70 mm2 of copper over a run of 10 metres and has to be taken into account when the parameters are set on the power source. The physics of electron flow means part of the energy is dissipated as heat, which is acceptable in assembly work but calls for a steady source with a high open circuit voltage. The low self impedance of SpawLab cables keeps current ripple down, which protects the IGBT transistors against overheating induced by an unstable secondary circuit. Thanks to the highly conductive brass earth clamp the contact point adds no extra resistance, so the available power is used to the full. It is technical backing for welding processes where precise settings have to allow for the behaviour of the equipment in use.
Brass pincer earth clamp 600 A
The EASY set is finished with a solid earth clamp cast from brass, which transfers energy far better than standard steel clips. Brass has higher electrical conductivity, and that is critical at current pulses of around 500 A, where every fraction of an ohm at the contact generates destructive heat. A strong spring with a high spring constant holds the jaws firmly against the welded material, which removes the risk of spot sparking that would damage the surface of the part. The 70 mm2 cable meets the clamp through a copper ferrule, which gives the joint mechanical and electrical durability for years. With this design the earth point stays stable even during intensive tacking of structural parts. A solid contact point is the foundation of safety for the welder electronics and prevents failures caused by a sudden loss of earth during welding.

FAQ: technical questions
Can I weld with this cable in a continuous cycle?
We do not advise continuous work at 500 A. A 70 mm2 cross section over 10 metres in continuous work would generate too much heat and risk melting the insulation. For continuous production choose the PRO series at 120 mm2.
Why is the EASY series lighter than the PRO series?
A smaller copper cross section is used (70 mm2 instead of 120 mm2), which lowers weight and price but limits welding time. It is an optimisation for mobility during assembly.
