ESAB Heliarc 283iw AC/DC is a TIG power source on alternating and direct current, with an MMA mode and liquid cooling. You set the current from 4 to 280 A, and in TIG the machine gives 280 A at a 100% duty cycle.
What this machine is for
On alternating current you weld aluminium and its alloys, on direct current stainless steel, carbon steel and nickel alloys. The MMA mode gives you a covered electrode where you cannot reach with a TIG torch. The range from 4 to 280 A goes low, so you will take thin sheet, and at the top it is enough for multi layer welds in thicker material.
The duty cycle in TIG is 280 A at 100%, that is continuous work at full current. In MMA mode the machine gives 280 A at a 40% duty cycle. Power sources like this work in the chemical and food industry, in shipyards, in automotive, aviation and power generation, and also on pipelines and steel structures, where the look and the tightness of the weld count.
The panel is digital and gives control over the whole cycle: gas flow, current up slope and down slope, frequency and the balance of the alternating current. You get pulse separately for direct and alternating current, which helps on thin sheet and when welding in position.
Features and equipment
- Digital arc control with AC and DC pulsing, repeatable parameters at every start.
- TIG and MMA work from one power source.
- Hot Start in covered electrode mode, a current boost at the start makes striking easier.
- Alternating current frequency adjustment from 20 to 200 Hz, a higher value narrows the arc.
- AC balance adjustment from 10 to 90%, that is the split between oxide cleaning and penetration.
- Pulse in direct current from 0.4 to 300 Hz and in alternating current from 0.4 to 2 Hz.
- Pulse share from 30 to 65%.
- Gas pre flow and post flow from 0.5 to 30 s, current down slope from 0.1 to 10 s.
- Heliarc cooling unit with a coolant circuit for the torch.
- Trolley set, that is a cart for the power source and the cooling unit.

What to watch out for
The supply is 400 V in a three phase system, 50 Hz or 60 Hz, with a 20 A mains fuse. The rated power is 11.0 kVA in TIG and 14.2 kVA in MMA, the open circuit voltage 68.0 V, and the power factor in TIG 0.75. The housing has class IP 21S, so this is equipment for work under a roof. The dimensions 620 x 300 x 600 mm are workshop size, but the weight makes a difference: the power source weighs 50 kg, the cooling unit 15 kg and the trolley set 35 kg, so together you have a station moved on wheels, not equipment carried over scaffolding.
With liquid cooling check the coolant level, the flow in the circuit and the state of the pump before the first strike, because a torch without flow melts in a few seconds. Ask as well about the type of torch and the length of the cable package, because the record lists them in general terms.
