The EWM Triton 400 is an inverter TIG power source on direct current with pulse, supplied from a 400 V three phase mains. It gives 400 A at a 40% duty cycle and 300 A at 100%, and the torch is cooled by liquid. The set weighs 250 kg and travels on a trolley together with the cooler.
What this machine is for
This is a power source for continuous work on thicker parts. A current of 300 A at a 100% duty cycle means welding without breaks forced by temperature, and 400 A at 40% gives a reserve on thick walled tanks and on penetration runs. The buyers are plants making tanks and pipelines, structures from high alloy steels, shipyards and assembly firms working on contracts with a strict technical regime.
The second feature of this set is the reach. The type 18 torch has a length from 20 to 30 m, so the welder goes inside a tank or climbs onto a structure while the power source stands at the supply point. With a machine that weighs 250 kg this is a real saving of time, because you do not roll it across the hall for every joint. A liquid cooled package this long needs a strong pump, and the machine has one as standard.
The third area is precision. HF ignition starts the arc without touching the electrode, so there are no tungsten inclusions in the weld, and that counts in the food and chemical industries. The pulse puts the amount of heat put into the material in order, narrows the heat affected zone and helps hold the pool in vertical and overhead positions, where the liquid metal wants to run. A narrower heat affected zone also means the corrosion resistance of high alloy steels is kept, and a regular ripple on the weld face often saves grinding. On pipes tested radiographically the repeatability and the absence of internal defects count, and this arc is made for orders like that. The machine also welds with a covered electrode, so after you change the cables over you make a correction or do assembly work with it without gas.
Features and equipment
- Inverter power source with digital parameter control: the circuit reacts fast to changes in the arc, so the arc stays focused also at low currents, and the machine takes voltage swings in the hall mains, where other loads work next to it. A soft characteristic makes leading the pool in forced positions easier, and an inverter draws less from the mains than a transformer power source of similar rating.
- HF ignition: the arc lights without touching the tungsten electrode, so the weld picks up no tungsten inclusions, and the start is repeatable also after an electrode change in the middle of the shift.
- TIG DC Pulse: the current runs between the peak and the base, so you weld thin stainless sheet without distortion and burn through, and the heat affected zone is narrower, which protects the corrosion resistance of high alloy steels. On thicker parts the pulsing holds the pool in the vertical and overhead position and limits runs of liquid metal, and a steady arc tires the eyes less through a whole shift.
- Pulse balance set from the panel: you pick the parameters fast, without long tuning of the machine before work.
- MMA mode: after you change the cables over you weld with a covered electrode, for example on repairs in the field or where the wind blows the gas shield away and the TIG method loses its point.
- Liquid cooling with a strong pump: the fluid circulates even in a package of 30 m length and holds a steady torch temperature in work at 400 A. A pump of this output is a condition here, because a shorter circuit would do with a weaker system, while a long hose puts up more flow resistance.
- Type 18 torch of 20 to 30 m length: reach around large items, inside tanks and on a structure, without moving the power source. A package like this also lowers the risk of damage to the machine in tight passages, because the power source stands in a safe place and only the hose travels around the object.
- Transport setup on a trolley: the power source, the cooler and the cables move around the hall as one station.

What to watch out for
The set weighs 250 kg, so for transport you need a pallet truck or a lift, around the hall you roll it on its own trolley. A 400 V supply needs a power socket and a circuit sized for the draw at 400 A. The power source works on direct current, for aluminium you need a machine with alternating current. HF ignition throws interference, so watch what stands next to controllers and numerically controlled machines.
The torch is used, and with a package of up to 30 m length the tightness of the circuit and the conductivity of the connectors matter a lot, look at them at collection together with the wear parts. A long package also means more flow resistance, so watch the level and the quality of the fluid in the cooler.
How we sell used machines
This unit was checked in our service workshop in Krotoszyn with measurements to PN-EN 60974-4 and a load test. The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added. We ship across the European Union, collection in person by appointment.
