The ESAB OrigoMig C420w is a transformer MIG/MAG welder with liquid cooling. The working range runs from 50 A to 420 A, at a 50% duty cycle the machine gives 420 A, and at 100% it gives 315 A. The supply is 400 V.
What this machine is for
This is a power source for makers of steel structures and plants that weld repeatable parts. You set the current in steps with a switch, and the wire feed steplessly with a knob, so operation comes down to two settings and there is no menu to click through. The transformer build stands up to dust and to hall conditions.
The machine has a two stroke mode, a four stroke mode and spot welding. Two stroke suits short welds and tacking, four stroke rests the hand on long runs, and spot welding joins thin sheets in a set time. Liquid cooling holds the temperature of the torch, so at 420 A and long beads the torch does not heat up as fast as with a gas circuit.

What to watch out for
The supply is 400 V three phase, that is a power circuit at the station. A transformer build is heavier than an inverter one, so you plan transport on a pallet. Stepped adjustment gives settings one switch step apart, and you correct the arc with the wire feed.
Liquid cooling calls for a check of the fluid level, the flow and the tightness of the quick couplings before the start. The torch in the set is 4 m long and rated for 500 A.
