EWM Alpha Q 330 Puls is an industrial, digital multiprocess MIG/MAG power source with an integrated liquid cooler. You set the current from 5 to 330 A, at a 40% duty cycle the machine gives 330 A, and in continuous work 210 A. Beyond standard MIG/MAG and pulse you have the EWM processes coldArc, forceArc, rootArc and pipeSolution, TIG Liftarc, MMA and gouging.
What this machine is for
Alpha Q 330 is a power source for production where one station works different materials and different thicknesses. The synergic logic picks the voltage, the current and the feed once you point out the material, the gas and the wire diameter, so the operator leads the settings with one knob along the sheet thickness. Pulse welding tears off a single drop per impulse and shoots it into the pool, so on acid resistant steel and aluminium there is no spatter and no discolouration, and grinding after welding practically disappears.
The special EWM processes split the tasks up. ForceArc gives a short, stiff spray arc with a high pressure, which hits the bottom of the groove instead of wandering over the walls of the bevel, so the bevel angle goes down from 60 to 30 degrees, and with it the number of layers and the use of wire and gas. ColdArc works the other way: the machine detects a short circuit of the wire and lowers the current, so you weld sheet from 0.5 mm, braze zinc coatings with CuSi wire and bridge gaps without burning the part. PipeSolution combines the short circuit arc with the pulsed one and corrects the current when the distance of the torch from the pipe changes, and rootArc gives a soft short arc for shaping the root and wide assembly gaps.
The machine also has an automatic side. On the panel you find a 19 pin analogue socket, a 7 pin digital one and a PC connector, and the machine handles mechanised interfaces, robots and welding tractors and the Q-DOC 9000 parameter documentation. This is equipment for a production hall and for three shift work, which beyond manual operation also works as a node in a line. Recording the parameters from production is useful wherever the joints are accepted under supervision and you have to show what a given part was welded on.
Features and equipment
- MIG/MAG standard and pulse methods, TIG Liftarc, MMA and gouging: one power source instead of three at the station.
- Current range from 5 to 330 A with a duty cycle of 330 A at 40% and 210 A at 100%: a reserve for thick welds and for continuous work.
- eFeed drive with four driven rolls: the wire runs without slipping at a speed from 0.5 to 25 m/min, also aluminium and cored wires in a 4 m torch.
- Chamber for a 300 mm spool: a full size spool instead of a small coil, fewer changeovers in production.
- Integrated COOL71 liquid cooler: it takes the heat off the torch when welding at a current of the order of 330 A.
- forceArc: a narrowed arc with a high pressure for thick sections, it lets you bring the bevel angle down from 60 to 30 degrees.
- coldArc: lowered heat on sheet from 0.5 mm and when brazing galvanised sheet with CuSi wire.
- rootArc: a soft short arc for root layers and for bridging wide gaps.
- pipeSolution: a hybrid of the short circuit and the pulsed arc for pipes in forced positions, with correction of the current when the torch distance changes.
- JOB base with synergic curves for steel, CrNi, aluminium and CuSi: you pick the material, the gas and the wire diameter, the machine sets the rest.
- Memories for your own programs from 129 to 169: a changeover between parts is one click.
- Thermal pulsing on the main and the reduced program: the machine switches between a high and a low current, which gives a face similar to a TIG pass, useful on thin aluminium vertical up.
- Arc dynamics control from minus 40 to plus 40: from soft and wide to hard and deeply penetrating.
- 19 pin analogue and 7 pin digital sockets and a PC connector: you connect automation, a tractor or copy off the Q-DOC 9000 documentation.

What to watch out for
The supply is 3 x 400 V with a tolerance from minus 25 to plus 20 percent, and the connected load reaches 13.9 kVA, so the machine needs a power connection with a suitable fuse. The duty cycle is 330 A at 40% and 210 A at 100%, so at the full current four minutes in ten go to welding. Liquid cooling means a compulsory check of the coolant level and of the flow in the circuit before the start, because a liquid cooled torch is damaged at once with an empty system.
The power source alone weighs about 64 kg, and together with the cooler, the trolley and a cylinder it makes a station to be rolled around the hall, not carried between floors. The torch in the set is 4 m long and rated 500 A, with longer bundles pick the accessories separately. For aluminium wires check the liner and the rolls for the given diameter, because soft filler needs a different set than steel. The panel has many functions, so it is worth planning the first day of work for going through the JOBs. The coldArc and forceArc processes give a real benefit only with the right gas and wire, so run a trial on a test piece before production.
How we sell used machines
This unit was checked in our service workshop in Krotoszyn with measurements to PN-EN 60974-4 and a load test. The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added. We ship across the European Union, collection in person by appointment.
