The Fronius Vario Star 247 is a transformer MIG/MAG welder of simple build, made on thick copper. The maker gives 240 A at a 30% duty cycle and 130 A in continuous work, and you set the current from 25 to 240 A at a voltage from 15.3 to 26 V. The set holds a torch 4 m long, an earth cable 5 m long and a Harris gas regulator.
What this machine is for
This is equipment for mild steel: repairs, frames, fencing and lighter structures. You change the voltage with a step switch from position 1 to 10, you set the wire feed steplessly, so you pick the parameters yourself. On the inside of the panel there is a table stuck on with a quick guide to the settings.
Besides continuous welding the machine handles a spot and a timed mode and switching between 2T and 4T. A two roll feeder guides the wire, which is enough for hard steel wires.

What to watch out for
The supply is three phase 400 V, and the documentation gives a 12 A fuse. Shielding gas cools the torch, and the duty cycle at 240 A is 30%, so plan long beads rather around 130 A. A two roll feeder leads hard steel wires well, soft aluminium wire is harder for it. A transformer weighs its own, organise the transport around the plant with a truck. You match the rolls and the liner to the wire diameter.
