Kemppi FastMig M420 is an industrial MIG/MAG power source with a separate wire feeder and an MR 300 manual panel. You set the current from 20 A to 420 A, at 380 A the machine runs at a 100% duty cycle. The power source alone weighs 35 kg, the supply is 400 V.
What this machine is for
This is a set for heavy production: production halls, shipyards and steel structure plants. At a 60% duty cycle the power source gives 420 A, and at 380 A it runs at a 100% duty cycle, so thick plate and multi run welds go without breaks to cool. That is the parameter that separates an industrial machine from a workshop power source.
The MR 300 panel is manual: two knobs, one for wire feed speed, the other for voltage. There are no synergic programs, so the arc is set by the welder and not by a curve from memory. Such thinking suits stations working to an approved welding procedure, where the parameters are written down and repeatable. The panel does have a settings menu, in which you pick the parameters for the start and the end of the weld.
The feeder has a four roll DuraTorque mechanism and takes 20 kg spools of 300 mm diameter, and the wire feed speed reaches 25 m/min. Four rolls hold an even feed also with a long cable package and with flux cored wires and larger diameters, where a two roll drive starts to slip.
Features and equipment
- A separate power source and wire feeder joined by an interconnection cable, the power source stands in one place and the feeder follows the welder.
- MR 300 manual panel with two knobs: wire speed and voltage.
- A settings menu for choosing the parameters for the start and the end of the weld.
- Four roll DuraTorque feed mechanism, an even feed with long cables and flux cored wires.
- Handling of 20 kg spools of 300 mm diameter, less frequent setting up on a longer run.
- Wire feed speed up to 25 m/min.
- Supply voltage tolerance from minus 15% to plus 20%, work on a weaker mains.

What to watch out for
The supply is 3 x 400 V with a tolerance from minus 15% to plus 20% at 50/60 Hz and a slow blow 35 A fuse, that is a separate power circuit. The record gives liquid cooling, and the set list has no cooling unit, so for a liquid cooled torch a cooling module has to be chosen. The torch in the set is 4 m and works without a liquid circuit.
The power source alone weighs 35 kg, but the set with the feeder and the 10 m package is carried by two people or moved on a trolley. The 10 m package gives reach around a large part, but on longer runs the voltage drop rises, so the arc goes soft. You match the feeder rollers to the diameter and type of wire, and you treat the guide and the contact tip as consumables.
