The Kemppi FastMig X 450 (FastMig X450) is a used multi-process MIG/MAG welder from the series that Kemppi described as a top-class solution for the most demanding industrial applications. It delivers 450 A at 60% and 350 A at 100% duty cycle, and has pulse, double pulse, synergic control, WiseFusion and a purchased WisePenetration licence, plus MMA as standard and CC/CV modes. The set includes the WFX 300 wire feeder with XF 38 panel, a Cool X cooling unit, a trolley, a 4 m MIG torch, a 4 m earth cable and a 1.5 m interconnection cable.
- 450 A and one source for several processes. Manual MIG/MAG, 1-MIG synergic, pulse, double pulse and MMA from 15 to 450 A, all from one source. The CC and CV modes let you connect external units, for example the MasterTig LT 250 for TIG.
- 350 A at 100% duty cycle. At 40°C. That is the current for spray arc with 1.2 mm wire for a whole shift.
- WiseFusion as standard on the WFX wire feeder. A short, focused arc held automatically in pulse and spray arc. For the FastMig X series Kemppi states up to 30% higher welding speed with WiseFusion.
- WisePenetration licence purchased. On the WFX 300 wire feeder it is a paid option, and on this unit it is permanently activated. The current does not drop with a long wire stick-out in the root and in deep grooves.
- Control that samples 20 million times per second. That is how Kemppi described the FastMig X electronics: the arc is measured and corrected continuously.
- Proven in the offshore industry. Kemppi supplied the FastMig X 450 to customers including Technip in Pori in 2013.
Welding processes of the Kemppi FastMig X 450
MIG/MAG with pulse, double pulse and 1-MIG synergic control
The MIG/MAG process package is the same as in the Kemppi FastMig Pulse 350: 1-MIG synergic control, in which you adjust only the wire speed, pulse, in which the pulses detach droplets without a short circuit, and double pulse from 0.4 to 8.0 Hz, which controls the weld pool and gives a weld face with regular ripples. We describe how each of them works in detail on the Pulse 350 page.
The difference lies in the intended use. Kemppi described the configuration with the WFX 300 wire feeder as pulsed MIG for thick plate and heavy workpieces, with pulse and double pulse as standard. The reserve of 450 A and 350 A at 100% duty cycle lets you run pulse on thick steel and aluminium for a whole shift.
WiseFusion and WisePenetration
WiseFusion holds the arc in pulse and spray arc at the short-circuit boundary, like cruise control keeping a constant distance, so the arc stays short and focused without constant readjustment of the settings. WisePenetration speeds up the wire when the stick-out grows and does not let the current drop. It works in 1-MIG programs for steel and helps in the root of fillet welds and in deep grooves. You will find the figures from the Kemppi tests on the Pulse 350 page.
MMA as standard
With a covered electrode you weld at currents from 15 to 450 A, with Arc Force and ignition power adjustable from -9 to +9. In the FastMig Pulse MMA was a separate licence, here it is standard, and the current reserve is enough for thick basic electrodes on structures and repairs. You choose the polarity as the electrode manufacturer specifies, and Kemppi describes connecting the holder to the positive pole. The electrode holder is not included in the set.
CC and CV modes: TIG from the same source
CV is a constant voltage characteristic, as in MIG/MAG, and CC a constant current one, as in TIG and MMA. The source works in both, from 10 to 450 A and from 10 to 50 V, and stores 10 MMA, CC and CV channels. With the MasterTig LT 250 unit connected, you turn it into a TIG workstation, without a second welder on the shop floor.
Arc voltage instead of terminal voltage
The WFX 300 wire feeder has built-in arc voltage measurement. With the measuring leads connected, including the voltage sensing lead to the workpiece, the machine calibrates itself after at least 5 s of welding, and the display shows the voltage at the arc, without the losses in the cables. In the WPS you then record the voltage that was actually at the arc. The measuring leads are not included in the set.
Functions and settings
- Hot Start from -50 to +100%, time in 2T from 0 to 9.9 s. No cold start and no lack of fusion at the start of the weld.
- Crater fill from 10 to 250% over a time from 0 to 10 s. The crater at the end is filled, and the risk of crater cracks is lower.
- Slow wire start from 10 to 99% and ignition power from -9 to +9. Soft ignition even with thick wire.
- 100 MIG channels and 10 MMA, CC and CV channels. Memory in the wire feeder, PIN lock and channel lock, so the settings assigned to a job stay exactly as they were saved.
- Cable length compensation from 10 to 100 m. The same arc with a short or a long interconnection cable.
- Up to 3 wire feeders on one source. A separate wire feeder for steel and aluminium wire, without reconfiguring.
- WFX 300 wire feeder. DuraTorque 400 on four rolls, from 1 to 25 m/min, steel wires from 0.6 to 1.6 mm, aluminium from 0.8 to 2.4 mm, cored from 0.8 to 2.0 mm, spool up to 20 kg.
- Cool X cooling unit. 1 kW capacity, tank of about 3 l, TEST button and coolant circuit monitoring.
- Protection. Two temperature-controlled fans, overvoltage protection, shutdown at too low or too high mains voltage, and load monitoring of the wire feed motor.
How the Kemppi FastMig X 450 compares with the competition
Other major brands have equivalents of the Wise functions: Fronius the Penetration Stabilizer and Arc Length Stabilizer in the TPS/i, EWM wiredArc and forceArc, and double pulse appears as SynchroPulse, superPuls, SuperPulse or DUO Plus. The FastMig X combines the Wise functions with MMA as standard and CC/CV modes, so one source handles pulsed MIG/MAG, stick electrode and, once the unit is connected, TIG.
The FastMig X platform also offered WiseRoot+ licences for root welding without backing and WiseThin+ licences for thin sheet. This unit does not have these licences.

What to watch out for
The source needs a 3 x 400 V connection with a 35 A time-delay fuse. When you work at the 450 A limit, check the torch rating. We will give you the model of the 4 m torch from this set on request. WiseRoot+, WiseThin+ and MatchLog are separate licences, and this unit does not have them. The electrode holder for MMA and the MasterTig LT 250 unit are not included in the set. The housings have signs of use visible in the photos.
Questions about the Kemppi FastMig X450
Can the Kemppi FastMig X 450 weld with stick electrodes?
Yes, MMA from 15 to 450 A is standard. You only need to connect an electrode holder.
Can I turn it into a TIG welder?
Yes, by connecting the Kemppi MasterTig LT 250 unit, which the source powers in CC mode. The unit itself is not included in the set.
How does the X 450 differ from the FastMig Pulse 350?
The X 450 has more current (450 A against 350 A), MMA as standard, CC/CV modes, WiseFusion as standard on the WFX wire feeder and arc voltage measurement in the wire feeder. The Pulse 350 is a pure MIG/MAG welder with pulse.
Can I connect a second wire feeder?
Yes. The source supports up to 3 wire feeders, so you can keep steel and aluminium wire on separate feeders without reconfiguring.
What power connection do I need?
3 x 400 V with a 35 A time-delay fuse, and on site a generator of at least 35 kVA.
