The Kemppi Kempoweld 3200W is a transformer MIG/MAG power source with a separate Wire 400 wire feeder and Kempocool liquid cooling. The maximum current is 320 A, and the duty cycle is 320 A at 40% and 200 A at 100%. You set the voltage in 40 steps, the supply is 400 V three phase, and the housing has protection class IP23.
What this machine is for
This is a power source for heavy production and for the metal workshop. The data sheet lists the uses: steel structures in production halls, parts of farm and construction machines that need deep fusion, overhaul work in power plants and mines, prefabrication of thick walled pipelines, series production of containers, trailers and truck frames, shipyards and boat workshops, and industrial gates, fences and railings.
The Wire 400 feeder stands on its own and joins the power source with a cable bundle a few metres long. That way you take it onto a scaffold or inside a vessel, while the heavy power source stays on the floor. The feeder housing shields the spool and the drive mechanism from filings and knocks. The reach is set by the length of the interconnection cable and that is the only limit of this layout.
Voltage adjustment covers 40 steps, set with two switches on the panel of the power source. The transformer taps give a repeatability that does not change after years of work, which makes it easier to write and keep WPS welding procedure specifications for repeatable parts. In exchange you have no stepless tuning of the voltage in 0.1 V steps, which in MIG/MAG welding of structural steel is rarely needed.
The Kempocool cooling is integrated with the housing. The fluid runs in a closed circuit and takes the heat from the torch neck and from the current leads, so you weld at 320 A in high duty cycles without melting the insulation and without fast wear of the gas nozzles. The temperature of the contact tip holds at a steady level, which keeps the arc parameters stable through the whole shift.
MIG/MAG is welding with a wire fed in a continuous way, under a shielding gas. The wire melts in the arc and fills the groove at once, so you deposit a lot of weld metal per minute and you do not chip slag after every bead. In heavy production what counts is therefore not the peak current itself, but how many hours a day the machine works at it, and here the bottleneck tends to be the torch, not the power source. Hence the liquid cooling in this model.
Stepped adjustment based on transformer taps is durable and resistant to electromagnetic interference. The current characteristic does not change with time, and in hall conditions that means fewer failures than in large electronic circuits. Service comes down to cleaning the cooling circuit, checking the switch contacts and the state of the rollers in the feeder, with no change of power modules.
Features and equipment
- Separate Wire 400 wire feeder with a 4 roll drive: it extends the reach of the operator and shields the spool from metal dirt and from mechanical damage.
- Integrated Kempocool liquid cooling circuit: it takes the heat from the torch neck and from the current leads, so a current of 320 A does not wear the accessories at the pace known from gas cooled torches.
- Running trolley with large wheels and a platform for a 40 or 50 litre gas cylinder held by chains: you roll the whole station in one piece, with no separate gas trolley.
- Stepped voltage adjustment in 40 steps, two switches on the panel: repeatable settings based on transformer taps.
- 2T and 4T modes: two stroke for tacks and short welds, four stroke for long beads without holding the trigger, which limits hand fatigue on vessels and frames.
- Burn back time adjustment: the wire does not stick to the pool or to the contact tip, and the free stick out has a repeatable length before the next arc start.
- Spot welding with a timer: the current switches off after the set time no matter how long you hold the trigger, so the spots come out the same and thin sheet does not distort. The condition is steady pressure of the joined parts before ignition, otherwise the fusion of the spot will be uneven.
- Gas test and wire feed buttons on the feeder: you set the flow on the regulator and pull the wire through the package with no voltage on the contact tip, which protects the operator when changing the spool and saves gas and wire.
- Steel housing and protection class IP23: the equipment takes production dust and the voltage jumps typical of an industrial hall.
- Work on aluminium after you fit out the feeder: U groove rollers, a teflon liner and argon, while liquid cooling keeps the torch in check with the high thermal conductivity of the alloy.

What to watch out for
The supply is 400 V three phase at 50 or 60 Hz. A 40% duty cycle at 320 A gives four minutes of welding in a ten minute window, work with no limit starts at 200 A, so plan thicker sections for several passes. The adjustment is stepped, you will not change the voltage while the arc burns, and there is no synergic control here, so you match the wire speed to the chosen step yourself.
The Kempocool cooler is built into the power source, so the torch has to be liquid cooled, and you change the fluid made for welding coolers from time to time, to prevent corrosion and scale in the circuit. The working reach is set by the length of the interconnection cable between the power source and the feeder, so ask about the package before you buy, because without it the station does not work.
The trolley holds a 40 or 50 litre cylinder, but the whole set is wide and needs a suitable passage in the hall. You match the rollers, the liner and the contact tip to the diameter and the type of wire, and for aluminium you need U groove rollers, a teflon liner and argon. You correct the burn back time after every larger change of feed speed or type of gas.
