The Rehm RP 460 is a transformer MIG/MAG power source for heavy production, with voltage adjustment in 40 steps and a separate wire feeder. The maker gives 460 A at a 40% duty cycle and 310 A at a 100% duty cycle at 40°C, with a supply of 3 x 400 V. The liquid cooler is integrated with the trolley of the power source.
What this machine is for
This is equipment for multi shift work on thick sections: steel structures, halls, bridges and flyovers, thick walled pressure vessels and pipelines, repairs of heavy equipment in the shipbuilding and mining industry, hard facing of parts of construction machines and the production of components for farming and transport. The maker states that the model shows its full range from a thickness of 3 to 5 mm upwards, although 40 adjustment steps let you go lower.
Copper windings and a voltage switch with 40 steps give an exact dosing of the arc energy. Every step changes the current and voltage characteristic, so you pick the depth of fusion and the width of the face precisely, and the heat affected zone stays under control. In multi pass welding of thick plate in the flat and horizontal positions this is the main tool of adjustment.
Liquid cooling is not an extra here. At 460 A a gas cooled torch would not take the thermal load, and forced circulation holds a steady temperature of the contact tip, which shows in even wire feeding and in fewer micro sticks.
Features and equipment
- Stepped voltage adjustment in 40 steps: a dense grading for an exact match of the arc energy to the thickness of the part.
- Integrated liquid cooler: it takes the heat from the torch at currents close to the maximum and steadies the parameters.
- Separate feeder with a drive on four rollers: slip free transport of the wire, with no swings of the feed speed, also with flux cored and aluminium wires.
- Work with the feeder inside a structure: the power source stays in place, you carry the feeder.
- Drive on all four rollers: no swings of the feed speed, which with a spray arc gives a repeatable transfer of metal and better wetting of the bevel edges.
- Electronic burn back adjustment: the delay setting protects the wire against sticking to the pool and to the contact tip, and the free stick out stays at the right length for the next arc start.

What to watch out for
Stepped adjustment means a different way of working than in a synergic machine: first you match the voltage step to the thickness and the gas, then the wire speed, and at the end you correct the settings on a test bead. With 40 steps the scale is dense enough to hit the parameters also on thinner material, but it takes a moment longer than picking a program from a list.
The supply is three phase 400 V from a power socket. The duty cycle is counted at a temperature of 40°C: 460 A at 40% and 310 A in continuous work, so plan long beads up to 310 A. The cooler is built in, which means the torch also has to be liquid cooled, and you check the fluid level and the tightness of the circuit before the shift.
There is no synergic control here: you match the wire speed to the voltage step and to the gas yourself, so repeatability depends on written down settings. The set with the power source and the separate feeder takes up room and needs a trolley when you move it. Before you buy, settle which torch, cable package and set of rollers belong to this piece and what wire diameter you feed.
