The ESAB Origo MIG C340 Pro 4WD is a transformer, stepped MIG/MAG semi automatic welder with a four roll feeder. The maker gives 340 A at a 30% duty cycle, 250 A at 60% and 195 A in continuous work at 100%, with a supply of 400 V, 3 phases, 50 to 60 Hz. You set the voltage with two switches in 40 steps, and the housing has class IP23.
What this machine is for
This is a classic power source for the metal workshop and for structural production. A stiff arc and simple handling count where the machine is simply meant to work: welding of steel structures in machine industry, repairs of farm and construction equipment, production of containers and vessels from low carbon steel, renovation of commercial vehicles, assembly of ventilation ducts from galvanised sheet with the right wire and the making of gates, fences and small architecture.
You weld carbon and stainless steel with it, and after you fit the feeder with U type rollers and a teflon liner also aluminium. The maker states that at 340 A you join steel in one pass up to a thickness of 12 to 15 mm, depending on the edge preparation. In continuous work count on 195 A, because that is the current at a 100% duty cycle.
The settings are manual: you pick the voltage step and the wire speed, and the machine does not correct you with synergic control. That asks for practice, but it gives full control over the arc energy and the amount of spatter. The trolley has a large shelf for a gas cylinder, so you roll the whole station across the hall.
Features and equipment
- 4 roll 4WD feeder: steady guiding of the wire with no slip, also with soft aluminium and with torches over 4 m, though the pressure for flux cored wires has to be set with care.
- 40 voltage adjustment steps on two switches: an exact match of the arc energy to the material thickness and less spatter.
- Creep-start: a slowed wire speed until it touches the material, that is a smooth ignition with no bounce.
- Adjustable Burn-back: an electronic delay of the arc switch off sets the length of the free wire stick out and protects the contact tip.
- 2T and 4T modes: four stroke spares the hand on long welds.
- Spot timer: repeatable tacking with the same pool time.
- Copper transformer and an IP23 housing: resistance to surges, to dust and to work outside a building.
- Trolley with a cylinder shelf: rolling of the station around the hall.
- Wire feed speed from 1.9 to 20 m/min.

What to watch out for
The supply is three phase 400 V at 50 to 60 Hz. The torch is gas cooled, so you add no cooler, but on long welds at high current it is the torch that limits the pace, and at a 100% duty cycle you work at 195 A. A weight of 114 kg means a trolley or a second person when you move it. Class IP23 lets you work under a roof outside, but not in the rain.
The machine has no adjustment of current rise and fall and no program memory, because those are settings from inverter equipment. For aluminium prepare U type rollers and a teflon liner. Before you buy, settle which torch and earth cable belong to this piece and which set of rollers is fitted in the feeder.
