The EWM Phoenix 421 is a liquid cooled inverter MIG/MAG welder. The power source gives 420 A at an 80% duty cycle and 380 A at a 100% duty cycle, and the panel has a synergic mode, pulse and super pulse.
What this machine is for
This is a machine for heavier steel joints and for continuous work. At a 100% duty cycle it holds 380 A, so you weld through a whole shift with no breaks for cooling, and at an 80% duty cycle you have 420 A on tap. Such a power source takes structures, frames, tanks and repairs of thick parts, where a smaller MIG welder cuts out on its thermal trip.
The control panel is a full one. You have a synergic mode, pulse and super pulse, that is double pulse, with which you lay the cap in ripples. The manufacturer describes a strong arc with a lower heat input and a stable direction, with deep fusion in the higher power range, and a short circuit arc for full penetration passes without bevelling the material. In practice you limit the edge preparation, because the arc goes into the joint on its own.

What to watch out for
The supply is 400 V from a three phase socket, and a current of around 420 A calls for an installation with a suitable fuse, which the description does not give. Cooling works on liquid, so you need a water cooled torch and a sound circuit with a cooling unit. The description does not list a wire feeder or a cooling unit in the set, so confirm what is included before you buy. The cables are 4 m each, so on larger structures work out the reach from the power source to the part.

The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added.
