The Kemppi Kempomat 2000 is a transformer MIG/MAG welder of integrated build, where the power source and the wire feeder sit in one housing on a trolley. The maximum welding current is 250 A, at a 30% duty cycle you get 250 A, at 60% 180 A and at 100% 140 A. You pick the voltage with a switch in eight steps, the supply is 400 V.
What this machine is for
This is a workshop machine for low alloy steel, stainless steel and aluminium, with wire from 0.6 to 1.2 mm in diameter. 140 A at a 100% duty cycle is enough for welds on thin and medium sheet run without breaks, and 250 A at a 30% duty cycle you take on short runs on thicker material. The trolley with large swivel wheels and room for a full size cylinder makes it a mobile bay.
The documentation points this model to car workshops, light metalwork, assembly jobs and farming. The applications listed are panel repairs in car and truck service, production of light steel structures and fencing, maintenance work on farms, welding of tubes and sections in a metalwork shop, assembly of process installations in the food industry, hardfacing of worn machine parts and series spot welds in panel work.
The machine works in a shield of active and inert gases, and after a change of polarity also with self shielded wire, that is without a cylinder. This is a solution for work in the field, where the wind blows the gas shield away, and self shielded wire smokes more, so the bay needs ventilation.
Features and equipment
- Integrated housing on a trolley: the transformer and the feed mechanism sit in one section, which gives a stiff construction, and steel sheet protects the assemblies against workshop dust and knocks. Large swivel wheels let you move the machine together with the cylinder around the shop and the repair workshop, at the cost of more weight than in inverter solutions.
- Four roll feeder: rolls on bearings guide the wire without slipping and without deforming the filler in the liner, also with torches 4 to 5 metres long and with soft aluminium wires, which shows up as a stable arc and a clean weld. The rolls have to be kept clean, because deposits on them spoil the evenness of the feed.
- Stepless adjustment of the wire feed speed: you match the speed to the material thickness whatever voltage step you have picked, so you fine tune the arc working point even when the voltage is fixed by the switch.
- Voltage adjustment in eight steps: a solid switch gives repeatable steps, resistant to the mechanical damage typical of a workshop and easy to write down in a work sheet when you make small parts. You will not set intermediate values, but every change of step acts on the arc at once, and a simple electromechanical circuit fails less often than control electronics.
- 2T and 4T modes: in four stroke the arc burns without holding the trigger, which takes the load off the hand on long welds and makes work on longer beads on a structure more comfortable.
- Spot and stitch welding with time adjustment: the circuit measures the burn time, so the welds come out repeatable in length, which helps in panel work, where the look and the lack of overheating of thin sheet count. You set the time with a potentiometer on the front panel, you can handle it in gloves.
- Work in a shield of active and inert gases and with self shielded wire: a change of polarity lets you work without a cylinder, for example in the field.
- The soft arc of a transformer: little spatter on carbon and stainless steel and deep penetration with a regular face, which in panel repairs clearly shortens the finishing work after welding.

What to watch out for
The data sheet gives a welding current up to 300 A, and the source description 250 A at most, so confirm the value on the rating plate. At a 100% duty cycle you get 140 A, so plan work at higher settings in sections. The 80 kg rolls around the shop on its own wheels, but for loading onto a vehicle you need two people or a ramp. The 400 V supply needs a power socket.
The voltage adjustment is in steps, so you will not set intermediate values, the choice of parameters stays with the welder. For aluminium you need a teflon liner and AlMg or AlSi wire, and you match the rolls to soft filler. With self shielded wire see to the ventilation of the bay. The source description does not list a torch, an earth cable or a regulator, so confirm the content of the set on collection, the same with the state of the rolls and the guides.
