The Kemppi Pro Evolution 4200 MXE is an industrial MIG/MAG power source for a 400 V three phase supply. It gives 420 A at an 80% duty cycle and 380 A at a continuous 100% load. The control is handled by the MXE panel with double pulse, synergy and 63 memory channels, and the whole set weighs about 200 kg.
What this machine is for
The duty cycle is the number that matters most here. Eight tenths of the time at 420 A and work without breaks at 380 A mean that the machine welds through a whole shift at a high current, without waiting for it to cool. You take a power source like this to thick plate, to fillet welds of a large section, to multi run joints and to hard facing, that is where a plain workshop power source starts to cut out after a few runs. The maker aimed this model at the production of heavy steel structures, at shipyards and the offshore sector, at pipeline and pressure vessel building and at workshops with a high production load.
The second area of work is welds that have to look good. The double pulse leads the arc in two overlaid rhythms: the faster one detaches the droplets one by one, the slower one changes the power over the cycle, so the weld face lies in regular ripples, close in look to a TIG run. The heat put into the part stays under control at the same time, so thin parts from aluminium and from stainless steel bend less, and the weld face usually needs no machining after welding. The plain pulse stays for work in forced positions, where a focused arc is easier to lead and there is little spatter even at a lower base current.
The third subject is repeatability. The MXE panel saves 63 separate sets of parameters, so you call the settings for a given part up from the memory instead of building them from scratch at every change of order. In a plant that works to WPS welding procedure sheets, that is the difference between repeatable welding and setting by eye. Beside MIG/MAG the machine handles the covered electrode, so you do repairs and assembly work with the same power source, without carting a second welder around. Synergy shortens the preparation: you pick the material and the wire diameter, and the circuit matches the feed speed to the set voltage. The manual mode stays for unusual joints, where you correct every parameter on its own.
Features and equipment
- Inverter power source for 420 A at an 80% duty cycle and 380 A at a continuous 100% load: on thick plate you plan no breaks for cooling, because the machine holds the current through most of the shift.
- MXE control panel: wide control of the process, digital displays showing the parameters as you go and fast switching between MIG/MAG, MMA and the manual mode.
- Double pulse: the arc runs in two overlaid rhythms, so the weld face lies in regular ripples and the heat put into the material stays under control. That limits the distortion of thin parts from aluminium and from stainless steel.
- Pulse mode: an ordered metal transfer in the arc limits spatter, makes welding in forced positions easier and gives a predictable penetration at a lower base current.
- Synergy and manual mode: once you point out the material and the wire diameter and the circuit matches the feed speed to the set voltage, once you set every parameter yourself for an unusual joint.
- MMA mode: the covered electrode from the same power source, useful in assembly and repair work, where you cannot put the feeder at the part.
- 63 memory channels: you switch saved settings in a few seconds, and that counts in repeatable production and in work to WPS guidelines.
- Microprocessor arc control: the circuit measures the parameters as you go and reacts to a change of arc length, so the penetration energy stays even in spite of the movements of the welder hand.
- Feeder with a four roll drive: four rolls feed the wire without slip and without deforming it, also soft aluminium alloys and cored wires at high feed speeds.
- Torch of 4 m length and a regulator in the set: you put the station together at once, without buying the basic accessories.
- Digital displays on the panel: you see the settings and the heat input while you weld, so you lead the pool on numbers and not on feel.
- High open circuit voltage and direct current dynamics in the MMA mode: the arc strikes surely also with basic and cellulosic electrodes, which like to stick to the material with a weaker power source.
- Cooling circuit integrated with the power source: in work at a current of about 420 A the heat is taken straight from the grip of the torch, so the contact tips and the gas nozzles wear more slowly and the torch stays lighter at the same load rating.

What to watch out for
The product card gives gas cooling and the source description liquid cooling together with a cooler in the set, so confirm the cooling version and the contents of this unit with us before you buy. If the machine comes with a liquid circuit, before the first strike check the coolant level, the flow and the tightness of the quick couplings, and pick a fluid with frost protection. In work with an gas cooled torch at a current close to 420 A the nozzle and the contact tip wear much faster, so count on a stock of consumables.
The supply is a 400 V three phase mains, and the power circuit you size for work at 420 A: the conductor cross section, the state of the contacts in the switchboard and a sound earth connection mean more here than the setting on the panel itself. The weight of the set is about 200 kg, so plan the transport, the unloading and the way in to the station beforehand, best with a pallet truck. The torch is 4 m, which on a large part means moving the machine or a longer cable. For work on aluminium count on a change of the liner to a teflon one and on rolls picked for soft filler, because standard steel rolls crush aluminium wire. With the double pulse a gas of steady composition and wire of repeatable quality help. Settle the extent of the contents, the state of the torch, the cables and the rolls with us before you buy.
How we sell used machines
This unit was checked in our service workshop in Krotoszyn with measurements to PN-EN 60974-4 and a load test. The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added. We ship across the European Union, collection in person by appointment.
