Selco Genesis 1700 AC/DC is a single phase TIG AC/DC inverter with an MMA mode and digital DSP control. You set the TIG current from 3 to 170 A, the MMA current from 3 to 150 A, the supply is 230 V or 115 V. It weighs about 18.8 kg and the housing is rated IP23S.
What this machine is for
This is a portable power source for precise TIG work. With alternating current you weld aluminium and its alloys, with direct current stainless steels, titanium and carbon steels. The MMA mode adds the covered electrode, so one machine handles both thin stainless sheet and a repair in the field.
The parameters depend on the supply voltage. At 230 V the TIG duty cycle at 40°C is 35% at 170 A, 60% at 150 A and 100% at 130 A, and at 115 V it is 150 A, 130 A and 110 A respectively. In MMA at 230 V it is 35% at 150 A, 60% at 120 A and 100% at 90 A, and at 115 V it is 120 A, 100 A and 80 A respectively. The open circuit voltage is 80 V.
Control is run by a digital multiprocessor system with a DSP signal processor, supported by the DDWC algorithm. The parameters are corrected on the fly, also when the arc length changes, which makes it easier to guide the torch and keeps the weld repeatable. A weight of about 18.8 kg, rounded to 19 kg in the sales material, and dimensions of about 500 x 190 x 400 mm make it equipment for the workshop and for site work.
The shape of the alternating current wave changes the character of the arc on aluminium. The square wave gives sharp transitions and strong oxide cleaning, the sine wave runs quieter and softer, the triangular wave concentrates the energy and limits the heat put into thin sheet. On top of that comes the balance control, that is the proportion between the cleaning half cycle and the penetrating one, and the frequency, which decides the width of the track. The AC/DC Mix mode combines both types of current and helps with alloys that run restlessly on pure alternating current.
In MMA mode the machine has synergy for the electrode type. A basic electrode needs a short arc and strong Arc Force, a rutile one runs softer, a cellulose one needs a high arc voltage, and electrodes for CrNi steel, aluminium and cast iron have their own characteristics. The DPC control lets you choose the voltage current curve, so the machine adapts to the electrode instead of forcing the welder to compensate for its behaviour by hand.
The U.P.F.R. system with active power factor correction raises the power factor to unity at an efficiency of 80%. In practice this means less current drawn from the socket at the same welding output, less disturbance fed into the installation and the option to work on a longer extension lead or on a weaker circuit. The 115 V supply is useful where that voltage is the site standard, but then the machine gives lower currents.

What to watch out for
The supply is single phase 230 V or 115 V with a tolerance of 15%, with a time delay fuse of 16 A at 230 V and 25 A at 115 V. The voltage version decides the output, at 115 V the machine gives lower currents at the same duty cycles. Power factor correction lets you work on a longer extension lead and on a weaker installation, and less disturbance fed into the mains matters where electronics run next to the machine.
Cooling is by air, supported by the COD system, the liquid cooler was an option. The TIG torch in the set is 8 m, which gives a good reach around the part, but with a torch that long the flow through the gas hose and the state of the connectors and of the control plug matter. To work you need argon with a regulator and a flow meter, tungsten electrodes and a set of nozzles, and for MMA an electrode holder with a cable.
The housing is rated IP23S, insulation class H, and the weight is about 18.8 kg, so you carry it without a trolley, but together with a gas cylinder that means two people or a trolley. The iPanel can be locked with a code, which helps where several welders work on one machine and the settings are to stay the same through a whole batch of parts.
How we sell used machines
This unit was checked in our service workshop in Krotoszyn with measurements to PN-EN 60974-4 and a load test. The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added. We ship across the European Union, collection in person by appointment.
