Rehm Synergic PRO2 280-4 is a MIG/MAG welder on a transformer, with microprocessor supervision of the process. The current lies within the range from 35 to 280 A at a voltage from 15.8 to 28 V, at a 40% duty cycle the machine gives 280 A, and in continuous work 180 A. The set is ready for work: an Abicor Binzel torch 4 m, an earth cable 5 m and a gas regulator.
What this machine is for
This is a combination of a transformer with a rectifier and modern electronics supervising the arc. You change the voltage with a hard switch of 10 steps, which gives a sure setting resistant to the dust of a metal shop and lets you jump the range without taking your gloves off. The process itself is watched over by a digital layer that a plain transformer does not have. The machine welds carbon steels and acid resistant steels with wires 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 mm, and the built in four roll drive holds the feed also in a bent torch liner.
The heart of the electronics is the CCM curve base covering over 900 synergic parameters. Once you choose a program the machine corrects the speed of the feeder motor itself when the power step changes, taking the wire diameter and the type of gas into account. On top of that come two supervision circuits: SMC watches the detachment of the drop and reacts when the distance of the nozzle from the material changes sharply, limiting spatter, and RSC reads the drop of speed from the encoder on the motor when the cable bundle puts up resistance, and adds power so that the wire runs evenly.
The third element is the SDI electronic choke. Instead of stiff magnetic taps you have a knob on a scale from 1 to 10 with an automatic mode, with which you change the hardness of the arc. A hard setting gives dense fusion at a higher current, a soft one protects against burning through when you go into sheet up to 2 mm. The manufacturer aimed this model at metalwork and assembly plants, at engineers who need the toughness of a transformer with the support of wire supervision, at production on steel sections and acid resistant stainless steel at a duty of 180 A and at sheet metal workshops using the timed modes. The sense of this build is simple: the power part is to survive the workshop, and the electronics are only to watch the process, so a fault in them does not stop the station the way it does in an inverter machine.
Features and equipment
- Transformer with a rectifier and a load up to 280 A: a power build without sensitive high voltage electronics, with forced air cooling.
- Current range from 35 to 280 A at a voltage from 15.8 to 28 V, with a duty cycle of 40% at 280 A and 100% at 180 A: a reserve for thicker sections and a real current for continuous work.
- Stepped voltage control in 10 steps: a mechanical switch holds the setting in a dusty workshop, and a change of range needs no taking off of gloves.
- Built in four roll drive: four pressure rolls limit the slip and the deformation of wires 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 mm on the way through the liner.
- CCM base of synergic curves with over 900 parameters: once you choose a program the machine matches the motor speed to the wire diameter and the gas profile.
- SMC arc length supervision: the electronics follow the detachment of the drop and react to a change of the nozzle distance, so there is less spatter than in a plain transformer.
- RSC feed stabilisation: an encoder on the motor detects a drop of speed when the cable bundle resists, and the circuit adds power so that the wire runs without tearing the arc.
- SDI electronic choke on a scale from 1 to 10 with an automatic mode: a harder arc digs a dense root, a soft one protects sheet up to 2 mm against burning through.
- RMI interface with clear displays: the Hold function freezes the current and the voltage after the end of a pass for checking, and the mode of choosing by thickness in millimetres makes the start easier for a new worker.
- 2T and 4T modes: two step for dense tack points, four step for welds several metres long on sections.
- Spot and interval welding with a time from 0.1 to 5 s: repeatable butt tacks and a broken pass with cooling phases, which protects thin sheet.
- Automatic slow start of the wire: the filler comes up to the material slowly and the current starts after contact, so the start does not scatter spatter.
- Adjustable burn back of the wire and gas post flow: the tip of the wire stays clean and the weld cools under the shield.
- Forced air cooling: the system holds 180 A at full load at a temperature of 40 degrees C.
- Housing rated IP23S with the S mark: cleared for stations with a raised risk of electric shock.
- A complete working set in the price: torch, earth and regulator, so once you connect power and gas the machine is ready for work.

What to watch out for
The supply is 3 x 400 V at 50 Hz, with a 16 A time delay fuse, so the machine needs no rebuilding of the installation. The duty cycle is 280 A at 40% and 180 A at 100%, and it is exactly 180 A that is the value you plan the output of the station for. The torch is cooled by the shielding gas, not by liquid, so for long work at a high current pick a torch with a suitable rating. The housing is rated IP23S with the S mark, that is cleared for work with a raised risk of electric shock.
A weight of about 72 kg and dimensions of 800 x 330 x 620 mm mean a machine on wheels, to be rolled around the hall and not carried between floors. The voltage changes in steps, in 10 steps, so between the steps you correct the wire feed and not the voltage. The torch and the cables from the set are used, it is worth looking at their state on collection. Match the rolls and the liner to the diameter of the wire you will work with. The SDI electronic choke gives an effect only when the rest of the parameters are chosen sensibly, so treat it as a correction and not as a way of saving a wrong voltage step.
How we sell used machines
This unit was checked in our service workshop in Krotoszyn with measurements to PN-EN 60974-4 and a load test. The price includes the first year of the basic service package: an inspection with cleaning of the machine and a validation measurement. Further years can be added. We ship across the European Union, collection in person by appointment.
