The Kemppi FastMig KMS 400 is an inverter MIG/MAG power source on IGBT transistors, built for multi shift work. The documentation gives 400 A at an 80% duty cycle and 320 A at 100%, and the MIG settings cover a range from 20 A and 10 V to 400 A and 39 V. The supply is 3 x 400 V, the housing has protection class IP23S.
What this machine is for
This is a power source for intensive production: steel structures, ship parts, tanks, repairs of construction and farm machines, where deep penetration is needed. A margin of 400 A at an 80% duty cycle and 320 A in continuous work means that the machine stands up to long runs on thick sections, and does not stop at short tacks. Digital arc control limits spatter, so after welding you have less mechanical work than with a classic transformer rectifier.
The KMS 400 is the base of the modular FastMig system, so you put the power source, the feeder and the cooler together for a given station, and you disconnect the feeder and take it to a place with hard access. The card lists the uses: welding of thick steel structures with the MIG/MAG method, repairs of chassis of trucks and trailers, production of containers, silos and process pipelines, installation work in the shipyard and petrochemical industry, prefabrication of parts of storage halls and bridges, regeneration of working surfaces by hard facing and welding of aluminium and stainless steel.
Synergic work shortens the setting of the parameters. You choose the type of wire, the shielding gas and the thickness of the material, and the power source picks the voltage and the feed speed itself, so a new worker gets to a repeatable weld faster. The machine also handles a covered electrode, which is useful in repairs away from the MIG/MAG station.
Features and equipment
- Inverter on IGBT modules: high power at a low weight and a lower energy draw than in transformer builds.
- Controlled forced cooling: the fan starts when the temperature of the components calls for it, so less dust gets inside.
- Work with a liquid cooler, for example FastCool 10: needed in long welding with currents above 300 A.
- IP23S housing: the equipment stands up to work outside and protects itself against drops falling at an angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical.
- Modular build: you disconnect the wire feeder from the power source and move it closer to the part.
- Digital control with an SF 52 or SF 53 panel: the settings repeat to the unit, and the display reads well in the strong light of a hall.
- Synergic programs: you choose the wire, the gas and the thickness, the power source picks the voltage and the wire feed speed.
- MatchLog: with a button in the torch you switch between two saved power levels, which is useful on parts with a changing wall thickness.
- Hold function: after the arc goes out the panel holds the real current and voltage from the end of the run on the display.
- Adjustment of the arc dynamics, that is of the inductance: you shape the penetration profile and damp the spatter for a given gas mixture.
- Creep Start: the wire runs up slower before it touches the material, so the strike is soft, without a kick of the torch.
- Crater Fill: the current falls in a controlled way at the end of the weld and fills the crater, which limits solidification cracks.
- 2T and 4T modes and welding with a covered electrode in MMA.
- Gas valves with a Pre-gas and Post-gas setting: the shield over the pool before the strike and after the arc goes out protects the weld against oxidation.

What to watch out for
The machine needs a 3 x 400 V connection, 50 or 60 Hz, with a tolerance from minus 15% to plus 20%. The documentation gives a slow blow fuse of 25 A or 32 A, depending on the load, and an apparent power up to 18.5 kVA, so pick the circuit with a margin. The working temperature range reaches plus 40 °C, in a warmer hall count on the thermal protection coming in sooner.
The product card gives liquid cooling, so for the station you need a cooler, for example FastCool 10, and before the start you check the fluid level and the flow in the circuit. The card does not list a wire feeder or a torch, confirm the configuration before you buy, because without a feeder the power source does not work in MIG/MAG. Protection class IP23S allows work outside, but it does not mean resistance to flooding.
