Description

Who this machine is for

Basic data of the Paton StandardMIG-160 MIG/MAG welder

The digital Paton StandardMIG 160 MIG/MAG MMA/TIG Lift welder is intended for semi-automatic arc welding in the MIG/MAG process, for gas shielded arc welding in the TIG process and for manual arc welding with a covered electrode in MMA, with direct current (DC) and with the option of using the PULSE function.

Machines of the "Standard" series are meant for home and light industrial use. The StandardMIG 160 holds a 45% duty cycle at its full rated current of 160A without losing output or weld quality. A solid build and simple operation make work with the machine trouble free, and despite the small size of the welder it lays down very good welds. The fully electronic control used in this series rules out the drawbacks typical of multi-function systems. The power source is preset to sensible values, so you can start work with it straight away. For more advanced jobs the machine has been given extra functions. A hallmark of the PATON™ Standard series semi-automatic machines is a high quality wire feeder with additional sealing, together with the KZ-2 central connector of the "EURO" type, which has become a worldwide standard and lets you pick any MIG/MAG torch you like.

Functions and capabilities of the versatile Paton StandardMIG-160 MIG/MAG welder

GASLESS WELDING, WELDING WITH SELF SHIELDED WIRE
All PATON MIG/MAG machines are prepared for welding with self shielded wire. Unlike the traditional MIG/MAG process, such welding runs without shielding gas, but it does call for a special welding wire. That wire produces its own shield, which helps protect the welding arc. Self shielded wire matched to PATON welders can be bought here, and the 5 kilogram spools fit every wire feeder.

BRAZE WELDING, INDUCTANCE CONTROL

Paton MIG/MAG machines in the Standard and PRO series can braze weld thanks to inductance switching in three steps. Inductance control tunes the arc characteristic to the thickness of the part being welded. The function is needed to change how fast the current flows when the arc voltage changes. The thinner the part welded with MIG/MAG, the higher the inductance should be (soft arc, less penetration), for thick parts it is the other way round (hard arc, deeper penetration).

PULSE IN EVERY PROCESS

PULSE in the TIG process, full control over the heat put into the material, a strong function for welding stainless and acid resistant steel,

PULSE in the MMA process, easier transfer of material from the electrode into the weld pool, better quality of the welded joint,

PULSE in the MIG/MAG process, the metal droplet breaks away from the end of the electrode wire more easily, and the pulsed current parameters can be adjusted. Pulsed MIG welding is useful for stainless and acid resistant steels and for aluminium alloys. Welding with pulse also gives better parameters when braze welding with CuSi3

MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE STANDARD AND PRO SERIES MIG/MAG MACHINES:

  • duty cycle, machines of the Standard series have a 45% duty cycle, while the PRO series has a 70% duty cycle at the same welding current. On top of that, PRO series machines reach continuous duty at a higher welding current than Standard series machines.
  • wire feeder, the PRO series has a separate wire feeder that handles spools from 15 to 18 kilos. The feeder can be separated from the power source for easier welding in other processes, for example MMA or TIG DC. The PRO series also comes in 2 roll or 4 roll wire feeder versions. In Standard series machines for a 230V supply the feeder is built into the welder, handles only spools up to 5 kilograms and always has two rolls.

Main strengths of the Paton StandardMIG-160 MIG/MAG welder:

  • Made in Europe
  • Electronic thermal protection that guards every heat generating part against overheating
  • Reliability from IGBT technology
  • Works on long extension leads and with a generator
  • Welding with pulsed current in every welding process
  • Improved arc stability
  • Switching of the working mode 2T, 4T, gas purge from the feeder function

  • The machines have protection against voltage surges and a work stabilising circuit, so they run correctly over a voltage range from 160V to 260V
  • Half the demand for electricity compared with traditional power sources
  • Good penetration and correct bead shape whatever the welding position

5 year manufacturer warranty for consumers and for companies

The top build quality is confirmed by a 5 year DOOR-to-DOOR manufacturer warranty. Models of the STD series carry a set of innovative design solutions that raise their resistance to failure. Among them are a sealed and trouble free wire feeder, a central connector of the KZ-2 EURO type and a built in module for voltage stabilisation.

The purchased set contains:

  • MIG/MAG welder PATON™ StandardMIG-160
  • Electrode holder 3m
  • Earth clamp 3m
  • Wire feed rolls 1x (0.6-0.8), 1x (1.0-1.2) V
  • Quick coupling for gas
  • Cardboard packaging
  • User manual

Main strengths:

  • Broad adjustment of the welding parameters:
    , MMA process, 1 (basic) + 10 (additional)
    , TIG process, 1 (basic) + 4 (additional)
    , MIG/MAG process, 2 (basic) + 4 (additional)
  • Welding with pulsed current, which is also programmable, in all welding modes.
  • A protection system against voltage surges.
  • Apart from the protection against voltage surges, a work stabilising system has been fitted for larger long term voltage differences in a single phase mains, from 160 V to 260 V. Keep in mind that at the minimum voltage of 160 V you can weld with an electrode no larger in diameter than ø3 mm, or run semi-automatic welding with wire no larger than ø 0.8 mm.
  • Matched to the standard power grid. Thanks to its high efficiency the power source gives half the demand for electricity compared with traditional power sources.
  • Adaptive fan speed, which rises as welding begins, climbs further when the welder is hot and drops when it is cool, which spares the fan and cuts the amount of dust inside the welder.
  • Comfortable work thanks to good load endurance at the rated current, which allows welding with electrodes practically without a break at the rated current.
  • Higher reliability of the welder in production with heavy dust and high humidity. The microelectronics have been moved into a separate chamber protected by a solid housing.
  • Longer life thanks to impregnation of the electronics with two coats of high quality lacquer, which keeps the product reliable through its whole service life.
  • The welder has electronic thermal protection that guards every heat generating part of the welding unit against overheating.
  • Improved arc stability.
  • Stepless adjustment of the welding parameters.
  • Efficiency from the use of the latest advanced IGBT technology.
