The Kemppi Pro 4000 Puls is a modular welding system with a current up to 400 A, put together for two processes: MIG/MAG with pulse and TIG. The supply is 400 V, with a Procool 10 liquid cooler, a Promig 500 MIG feeder and a Pro Tig 410 TIG unit on a trolley. The weight of the set is 100 kg.
What this machine is for
On this set you weld black steel, stainless steel and aluminium. On the MIG/MAG side the Promig 500 feeder works with pulse, on the TIG side the Pro Tig 410 unit with welding with a tungsten electrode in a shield of inert gas. One station closes both methods, without putting a second machine next to it and without sharing the space at the table.
A current of 400 A gives joining of thick structural elements and work under a high load. Pulse orders the transfer of drops in the arc: there is less spatter, and the heat input falls, so thin aluminium sheet and stainless steel do not distort so much and do not burn through. On thick elements pulse leaves deep penetration.
Such a set was taken by makers of steel and bridge structures, machine industry, shipyards, plants making tanks and thick walled pipelines, makers of structures of aluminium and acid resistant steel and repair workshops for construction equipment. Everywhere the part is tacked with the TIG method and filled with the MIG method, two processes on one power source shorten the changeover of the station.
The ML panel, that is MIG Logic, has ready welding programs for different metals, so a change of material comes down to the choice of a program, and not to putting the parameters together by hand from zero. Digital displays show the current and the voltage as you work, so you run the welding in line with the WPS welding procedure and you have a reading for quality control.
On the TIG side you get welding with a non consumable electrode in a shield of noble gases, with arc ignition and with close control of the current. This is how materials of different thickness are joined where tightness and the look of the weld are the condition of acceptance: on pipelines, chemical apparatus and pressure tanks. The TIG torch in the set is 8 m long, so you walk away from the power source for the length of the whole part.
The power source holds the settings under a long load and does not overheat the power components, so the penetration stays deep and the quality of the joints repeatable through the whole shift. The energy efficiency of inverter power sources is higher than of transformer ones with a similar current, which you see in the draw in continuous work. Two processes on one power source take a second machine off the station, so the space at the table and the cost of the purchase are smaller.
The whole set stands on a trolley, so moving the station in the hall does not call for taking the system apart. The holders on the trolley keep the welding cables above the floor, so the packages do not lie in the walkway and rub through less.
Features and equipment
- MIG/MAG welding with pulse. A controlled transfer of metal limits spatter and shortens the work after welding, and lower heat input protects thin materials against distortion.
- TIG welding. The Pro Tig 410 unit handles a tungsten electrode in a shield of noble gases, so you make tight and clean joints on pipelines, chemical apparatus and pressure tanks.
- Digital ML panel (MIG Logic). Ready programs for black steel, stainless steel and aluminium shorten the preparation of the machine, and the digital readings show the current and the voltage in real time.
- MLS control with arc stabilisation. The circuit corrects the parameters when the distance of the torch from the material changes, so the face and the penetration stay even also in forced positions.
- Adjustment of the arc dynamics and of the pulse parameters. You move the characteristic from soft to hard and match the shape of the weld to the joint.
- Promig 500 MIG feeder. An external feeding unit, moved away from the power source, with a drive that leads the wire evenly whatever its diameter and type. Even feeding translates into a stable arc and into no porosity in the weld, which in pulsed welding decides the result.
- Pro Tig 410 TIG unit. A second unit at the station, so a move from the MIG method to TIG is a change of the torch, and not a rebuild of the set. You place both units freely around the part and widen the working reach.
- Procool 10 liquid cooler. It takes the heat away from the torches of both processes, it is tied to the logic of the power source and it blocks welding when there is no flow of coolant. A steady temperature of the circuit protects the wear parts of the torch and holds an even face in welding aluminium.
- Trolley. You move the whole system around the hall in one piece, and you hang the cables on the holders.

What to watch out for
The supply is 400 V, three phases. The liquid cooling serves both processes, so you check the coolant level, the flow and the tightness of the quick couplings before every shift, and with a TIG torch 8 m long you also watch that the hoses are clear along the whole bundle. At such a length of the package the voltage drop on the cable is bigger than with a short torch, which you see at the upper settings.
The weight of the set is 100 kg, for transport you need a pallet and a forklift, and you split the system into modules: the power source, the cooler and the two feeding units. The MIG torch from the set is rated for 500 A, that is with a margin over the current of the power source, and the TIG torch for 300 A, so you will not use the upper settings of the power source with it. The card does not give the duty cycle at the single currents, confirm it before you buy if you plan continuous work at the maximum.
For welding aluminium you need rolls for soft wire and a liner in the feeder, the card does not say which rolls are fitted. The ML panel needs a moment of learning, but the saved programs shorten the later changeovers. Confirm the list of equipment and the state of the feeding units before you buy.
