Lincoln Electric CV 420 Synergia is a transformer direct current power source for MIG/MAG. You set the current from 30 to 420 A, at a 60% duty cycle the machine gives 420 A, and 325 A it pulls without a break. Supply is 400 V in a three phase system, the weight is 163 kg.
What this machine is for
This is a power source for heavy and shipbuilding industry and for building large steel structures. Typical jobs are halls and bridges, load bearing parts of mining machines, thick wall pipelines and turbine foundations, trailer frames, truck bodies and rail rolling stock. On top of that comes rebuild hardfacing of construction machine parts that work under abrasion.
The transformer architecture gives a stiff arc and a high magnetic inertia, so the metal transfer in the spray arc is calm and repeatable. The machine takes poor supply parameters in the plant, metal dust and temperature swings better than a power source with complex power electronics. A duty cycle of 420 A at 60% and 325 A at 100% sets it for multi shift production from thick wall parts, welded with wires of larger diameters. The range from 30 A goes lower when you have to add a short weld or a repair, so one station handles different parts.
The synergic control matches the arc voltage to the set wire feed speed, after you point to the material and the filler diameter. The system maps the output characteristics of the power source against the resistance of the welding circuit, so it corrects the parameters also when the electrode stickout changes, that is when working in fixed positions. Thanks to that you guide the torch instead of correcting settings during the bead, and the penetration comes out repeatable at a lower heat input and with less distortion of the part. With frequent changes of material thickness this shortens the time needed to set the station for the next position.
Features and equipment
- Synergic control: after you point to the material and the filler diameter the system matches the arc voltage to the wire feed speed and corrects it when the electrode stickout changes.
- Adjustable electronic inductance: a higher value smooths the face and limits spatter on high alloy steel and aluminium, a lower one concentrates the energy and gives deeper penetration in thick structural steel.
- Inductance also affects the metallurgy of the weld and the short circuit current, so you match it to the welding position, for example vertical or overhead, and you have less cleaning of the part after welding.
- Fan As Needed fan control: the fan starts only when the thermal sensors detect a rise in the temperature of the power parts, so less dust and swarf gets inside the housing.
- Fan As Needed also lowers the noise at the station and the energy draw in standby, and the fan bearings run for shorter, so they last longer.
- The electronics are separated from the cooling air stream in a tunnel layout, so that conductive dirt does not settle on the printed boards.
- Transformer insulation class H, meant for high working temperatures.
- Housing in class IP23, resistant to foreign bodies and to rain falling at an angle.
- Trolley with large wheels for transport over uneven hall and building site ground.
- Panel protected by a front frame against an accidental knock.
- Mechanical resistance to shocks and knocks, useful when moving the machine between halls and building sites.
- Rectifier bridge in a classic layout, without complex power electronics.

What to watch out for
Supply is 400 V in a three phase system, and the recommended fuse is a slow blow type C 32 A. The slow characteristic is needed here because a transformer draws a high momentary current at start up and a fast fuse can trip, while at the maximum welding current the circuit still has to carry the draw without cut outs. The housing has class IP23, so the machine takes rain falling at an angle, but it does not suit constant work outdoors or washing with water. Insulation class H says the transformer is prepared for a high working temperature, but the air inlet and outlet have to be kept clear.
The product record gives liquid cooling, and the documentation describes the Fan As Needed fan system, so for a liquid cooled torch you need a separate cooling module. The machine weighs 163 kg and has a trolley with large wheels, over a flat hall you will roll it alone, but plan unloading and the ramp with a forklift. You put together the wire feeder, the cable package and the torch for your station separately. The duty cycle is 420 A at 60% and 325 A at 100%, and it is the second number that sets the pace of production without breaks.
