MT 540 W is a liquid-cooled Böhler Welding MIG/MAG torch with a 4 m cable assembly and Euro connector. It takes 0.8 to 1.6 mm wire and is rated 550 A with Ar/CO2 mixed gas and 600 A with CO2 at 100% duty cycle. The same model is also available as a 3 m version (81.05.72860) with a shorter cable assembly.
What it is for
The highest rating in the MT range: 550 A with mixed gas and 600 A with CO2 at 100% duty cycle. Choose it for the machines listed below when you weld for long periods at high current and want more headroom than MT 440 W (450 and 500 A).
The torch needs a cooling unit with coolant. The 30 mm M8 contact tips are the same as on MT 440 W, but the M8 tip holder and the gas nozzle are specific to MT 540 W. For 1.6 mm steel wire the M8 tip comes in CuCrZr.

Did this torch use to have number 72878?
Yes. Böhler states that 81.05.72878 replaces number 72878.
What is the difference between ECu and CuCrZr tips?
ECu is electrolytic copper, CuCrZr is a copper alloy with chromium and zirconium that is harder and copes better with high temperature. For welding at high current CuCrZr is the more common choice. For 1.6 mm steel wire the M8 tip is available only in CuCrZr.
Does it fit URANOS NX 2200 and 2700?
In the Böhler 2026/27 price list MT 540 W is not among the accessories of URANOS NX 2200, 2700 or 3200 GSM. For these machines choose MT 440 W or MT 440 W U/D.
