What it is for
Tightening the back cap presses the collet into the collet body, and the collet clamps the electrode. Collet and body are chosen by electrode diameter: for 1.0 mm use the 0.5 to 1.2 mm collet body (82.10.156) or gas lens collet body 82.10.352. Replace the collet when the electrode slips or the collet is distorted.

Which collet do I need?
The one matching your electrode diameter. The 17/18/26 range also has collets for 1.6, 2.4, 3.2 and 4.0 mm.
Does it fit the ST 2500 torch?
No. The ST 2500 uses 9/20 consumables; there the 1.0 mm collet is 82.10.201.
