The Böhler Welding Laser Guard Air is an auto-darkening helmet for hand-held laser welding and conventional arc welding, prepared for a PAPR powered air system. It protects to EN 207 against laser radiation at wavelengths of 1000 to 1100 nm (filter D LB7 IR LB8, shell D LB6 IR LB8), and its ADF has shade ranges 5-8 and 9-13. You buy the helmet only, without a blower unit: connect Guardian Air, Evolution Air or the Supplied Air regulator.

Who it is for
For welders who work with a hand-held laser or a hybrid process, also weld MIG/MAG, TIG or MMA at the same workstation and need respiratory protection. The Laser Guard Air belongs to the Guardian family. The manual requires the laser safety officer to approve the choice of laser eye protection based on a risk assessment: check that the wavelength and protection levels in the marking match your laser source.
Which blower unit it works with
- Böhler Welding Guardian Air PAPR blower unit, complete kit with filter: with the Laser Guard Air class TH3 P R SL to EN 12941; airflow 180 to 220 l/min in 6 levels, up to 8 h on the 5200 mAh battery, 870 g.
- Böhler Welding Evolution Air PAPR blower unit, complete kit with filters: class TH3 P R SL, and TH3 A1B1E1 P R SL with gas filters; airflow 180 to 240 l/min in 6 levels, up to 14 h on the 7800 mAh battery.
- Böhler Welding Supplied Air compressed air regulator for air-fed helmets, complete kit: compressed air supply at 3 to 8 bar, class 4A to EN 14594:2018, airflow 180 to 220 l/min in 7 levels.
The Laser Guard Air is compatible with all Böhler Welding air systems, and the Laser Guard fact sheet gives the protection classes for all three combinations. To work with it you need a unit and a hose: the Böhler Welding Guardian Air PAPR blower unit, complete kit with filter and Böhler Welding Evolution Air PAPR blower unit, complete kit with filters come with a flexible hose, and you can add a spare separately, the rigid Böhler Welding standard air hose 100 cm Evolution Air, Guardian Air, Supplied Air (100 cm) or the Böhler Welding FLEX flexible air hose up to 180 cm Evolution Air, Guardian Air (FLEX, up to 180 cm). Units and the regulator are listed in the Powered air systems category.
Which version to choose
The Böhler Welding Laser Guard helmet for laser and hybrid welding has the same ADF, shell and laser protection to EN 207 (filter LB7, shell LB6) but no face seal, so it works without an air supply. With the Air version you pay for the face seal and air readiness: with Guardian Air or Evolution Air you breathe filtered air in class TH3 P R SL.
What makes the Laser Guard Air different
- Laser protection to EN 207:2017 for 1000 to 1100 nm: filter D LB7 IR LB8, shell D LB6 IR LB8; values apply to exposure up to 5 s.
- ADF: light state shade 4, CUT (5-8) and WELD (9-13) switched by holding the SHADE button.
- Class V1 to ISO 16321-2, 98 x 53 mm viewing area, True Colour technology with reduced blue light transmission.
- Grind mode via a button on the outside of the shell, without taking the helmet off.
- Delay from 0.1 to 0.9 s, each press adds 0.1 s; sensitivity set with a button.
- ADF permanently connected to the shell, powered by a CR2450 battery, switches itself off after 15 minutes without use.
- Guardian headgear with top strap, longitudinal and angular adjustment, face seal for Guardian Air helmets.
- Matt blue shell.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Laser Guard Air suit every laser?
No. Protection covers wavelengths of 1000 to 1100 nm, with level LB7 for the filter and LB6 for the shell to EN 207, for exposure up to 5 s. Compare the marking with your laser's data and agree the choice with the laser safety officer.
Can I look into the laser beam?
No. The filters protect against an accidental hit by the beam; they are not meant for looking into it. Replace a helmet damaged by a laser immediately.
What distance should I keep from the arc?
The manual recommends 400 to 450 mm between arc and helmet for all welding processes. A shorter distance risks damaging the ADF and delaminating the LCD.
Can I use it without the air supply?
No. The Guardian Air and Evolution Air manuals warn that with the unit switched off carbon dioxide builds up quickly and oxygen drops under a sealed helmet.
