Who it is for

For welders who switch between welding and grinding all shift long and want to breathe filtered air while doing it. The manual lists MIG/MAG, TIG with inverters, MMA, argon and helium shielded welding and AC/DC pulse welding. You grind with the filter raised while the air supply keeps running, because the hose stays connected to the shell.

Which blower unit it works with

The Guardian 50FM Air is on the lists of certified helmets in the Guardian Air, Evolution Air and Supplied Air manuals, so changing the system does not require a new helmet. Units and kits are listed in the Powered air systems category.

What makes the Guardian 50FM Air different

  • Flip-up ADF: lowered, it protects during welding; raised, it uncovers the grinding visor.
  • Guardian 50FM filter: light state shade 4, ranges 5-9 and 9-13 and grind mode selected on the filter.
  • Three delay times after the arc stops: 0.1 s, 0.5 s and 0.9 s, set with a switch on the filter.
  • Sensitivity set with a knob, automatic switch-off after 15 minutes without use.
  • 50 x 100 mm viewing area, True Blue Color technology, optical class 1/1/1/2 to EN 379.
  • Adjustable air outlet to the forehead, face seal and air duct connector fitted at the factory.
  • Headgear with top strap, longitudinal and angular adjustment.
  • Matt blue shell, replaceable CR2450 battery in the filter.

Frequently asked questions

Which delay times does the filter offer?

Three: SLOW 0.9 s, MID 0.5 s and FAST 0.1 s. This is the time the filter takes to return from dark to light after the arc stops; you select it with a switch on the ADF.

Can I weld with the filter raised?

No. The Guardian 50FM Air manual states that eye protection against arc radiation applies only with the filter lowered. The visor underneath is for grinding.

Can I use it without a blower unit?

No. With the air supply off, carbon dioxide builds up and oxygen drops quickly under a sealed helmet, as the Guardian Air and Evolution Air manuals warn.

How long does Guardian Air run on one charge?

Up to 8 h at minimum airflow with a new filter and a charged 5200 mAh battery, 6 h at maximum. Charging takes 4 to 6 h, and before first use you run the battery flat and charge it for 16 h.

How does it differ from the Guardian 50M Air and the Air Kit?

The Böhler Welding Guardian 50M Air welding helmet for PAPR powered air systems has a fixed filter with one range, 9-13. The Guardian 50FM Air has a flip-up filter with ranges 5-9 and 9-13, three delay times and a grinding visor underneath: that is what the extra cost buys. The complete set with the Guardian Air unit is the Böhler Welding Guardian 50FM Air Kit, flip-up welding helmet with Guardian Air PAPR.
